Four Broncos reach double figure points led by Lenhardt's 21.
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State used a balanced attack Tuesday night to win its home opener 80-61 over North Dakota State in a nonconference women's basketball game in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. Boise State used two runs in the first half to take control, the first was a 9-0 run to open the contest followed by a 14-0 run to stretch a 15-10 lead to 29-10. The Broncos never were threatened after that and led by as many as 24 points in the second period.
"I was really pleased with how our team played tonight," said coach Gordy Presnell. "We played together as a team and were able to take control early. We shot the ball well and had alot of people contribute tonight like we did at Utah Valley. I am really happy with the way Lauren (Lenhardt) is providing leadership on the court and how everyone is feeding off her intensity."
Lauren Lenhardt continued her early season heroics just missing her second double-double of the year with 21 points and nine rebounds, she shot nine-of-11 from the floor on the night. Brandi Henton went six-of-14 from the floor to finish with 14 points and three rebounds.
Amber Vandiver, sophomore center, had a solid debut game as a starter recording 10 points, seven rebounds and one block. Julia Marshall also looked strong netting 10 points on five-of-eight shooting from the floor to go with two rebounds, three assists and one steal.
The balanced attack had Rosalie Cutri chipping in seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Diana Lee finished with six points, two boards and team-best nine assists, while Erica Martinez contributed six points, four rebounds and one assist.
On the night Boise State shot well hitting 47.8 percent (33-69) from the floor and 91.7 percent (11-12) from the free-throw line. The Broncos dominated the paint out scoring the Bison 48-16. They held a slim advantage in rebounding 51-45.
NDSU shot 28.2 percent (22-78) from the floor, 19.2 percent (5-26) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (12-18) from the charity stripe. Dani Degagne led the Bison with 19 points and six rebounds, followed by Marena Whittle with a double-double on 14 points and 12 boards.
Boise State used a series of runs in the first half to establish control of the game. The Broncos opened fast racing out to a 9-0 lead in the first two and half minutes powered by five Lenhardt points. Then after exchanging a few baskets, Boise State rolled off a 14-0 run to take a 29-10 lead with 9:58 left in the period. The Broncos never looked back after that as they went into halftime up 49-34.
Both Lenhardt and Henton recorded 11 first half points as the Broncos shot 53 percent from the floor while holding North Dakota State to 29 percent in the period.
Vandiver led a 10-1 Boise State run to open the second period by scoring six of the points herself as the Broncos took a 59-35 lead with 16:44 to play. The 24-point advantage following that run proved to be a game-high for Boise State who maintained a 17-to-24 point lead for the final 15 minutes of the contest.
