Boise State Runs Past Southern Oregon 95-58 in Exhibition Win

BOISE, Idaho - Kayla Reinhart scored 25 points to lead Boise State to a commanding 95-58 victory over Southern Oregon in a women’s basketball game in Taco Bell Arena Monday night. The Broncos used a 17-0 run to break a close 9-8 game open early in the first half. The Broncos ran at will most of the night with Reinhart leading a trio Broncos in double figure scoring as Keiahnna Engel scored 16 points with true freshman Brooke Pahukoa adding 14. The exhibition game was a tune-up in preparation for Friday’s season opener against Southern Utah at 5:30 p.m. in the first contest of a doubleheader with the men’s team. 

The Broncos opened the game on a 7-0 run to establish their up tempo offense. After Southern Oregon hit a pair of treys to pull within 9-8, Boise State rolled off the decisive 17-0 run to take control. Boise State stretched its lead to 30 points twice late in the first period with the last coming at 45-15 with 5:15 to go.

Southern Oregon attempted to rally late out scoring Boise State 6-0 to close the half down 24 points, 47-23. Brooke Pahukoa led the Broncos in the opening 20 minutes with 12 points followed by Kayla Reinhart with nine and Engel with eight.

The Raiders came out firing to open the second period. They scored the first six points to extended their run that ended the first half to 12-0, pulling to within 18 points at 47-29 with 18:31 left in the game. SOU would trail by 18 once more moments later at 49-31 before the Broncos regrouped to dominate the final half.

Boise State led by as many as 37 points twice late in the contest including the final margin with the score at 95-58. The Broncos finished the game shooting 42.3 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-18) from beyond the 3-point arc and 72.4 percent (21-29) from the free-throw line.

Reinhart’s 25 points would have been a career-high if it was not an exhibition contest. The sophomore went 10-of-13 (.769 pct.) from the floor with two 3-pointers and hit 3-of-5 free throws during the game. Engel followed with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, one block and team-high eight steals.

Brooke Pahukoa added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, one block and five steals. Lexie Der just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, she also had two blocks and two steals. Miquelle Askew and Tonishia Childress each matched Der’s points with nine apiece, Askew also had seven rebounds. Freshman point guard Yaiza Rodriguez added eight points, four boards, team-high six assists and two steals.

Southern Oregon was led by Bree Park with nine points and five rebounds, followed by Autumn Durand with eight points and seven boards, while Brenna Anderson had a team-high 10 rebounds. The Raiders shot 25.7 percent from the floor, 35 percent (7-20) from the arc and 59.1 percent (13-22) from the charity stripe.

Keiahnna Engel returned to action as a starter for Boise State after redshirting last season because of injury. Five newcomers saw their first action as Broncos with Brooke Pahukoa and Yaiza Rodriguez starting, while Tonishia Childress, Kenna McDavis and Hailey Laird came in off the bench.
