NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Deanna Weaver led Boise State with 28 points in the Broncos 80-59 Women’s Basketball Invitational quarterfinal loss at Stephen F. Austin Saturday night in Nacogdoches, Texas. Boise State led by as many as 11 points in the first period and 34-31 at the half. Unfortunately, foul trouble mounted for the Broncos late in the opening 20 minutes with three Broncos picking up a third foul by intermission, which had ramifications throughout the final half taking the steam out of Boise State. SFA rallied early in the second half utilizing its height and athletic advantage to dominate the final period out scoring the Blue and Orange 49-25.

“I am really proud of the team and their competitive spirit,” said head coach Gordy Presnell. “The foul trouble really took us out of it and caused us to become tentative. Give SFA credit, their offensive rebounding really hurt us tonight especially in the second half. I am not sure I have ever seen a team give up that many o-boards. Regardless of tonight’s result in the end I think this tournament was a really good experience for our team. It gave us more time to work with this group. We have a very young team and will return everyone next year, we’ll add a few pieces and look to an exciting future next year.”

The loss ends Boise State’s season at 18-14 overall, not bad for a team that was dominated by sophomores and freshmen and for the most part played only one upperclassman in junior Deanna Weaver. Everyone is expected back next season.

SFA took over in the second half catching fire from beyond the arc making 8-of-14 3-pointers in the period to finish with 12 in the game. The Ladyjacks also dominated the glass throughout the game out rebounding the Broncos 54-to-29 overall and 21-to-12 in offensive boards which they converted into a 24-to-7 advantage in second chance points in the contest.

With the game tied at 45 with 14:03 to play, the Ladyjacks took over rolling off a 10-0 run to go up 55-45 with less than nine minutes left. SFA never looked back after that slowly pulling away. The Broncos foul trouble increased and they began to struggle shooting. It seemed every time the Broncos made a little run SFA responded with a 3-pointer. The Southland Conference regular-season co-champions eventually took a game-high 23-point lead late in the contest before settling for the 80-59 win over Boise State.

Weaver’s outstanding night saw her lead the Broncos from the opening basket, the first of five 3-pointers. Despite picking three fouls in the first half, the junior from Santa Clara, Calif., finished the night hitting 11-of-20 from the floor, 5-of-8 3-pointers and went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. She added a team-high six rebounds, one assist and one steal in 30 minutes.

Miquelle Askew also picked up three first half fouls and a fourth midway through the second period, but managed to hit double figure points for the 25th time this season finishing with 10, to go with four rebounds, two blocks and one steal in 28 minutes.

Brooke Pahukoa was the only other Bronco to reach double-digit points and to score more than five points finishing with 10 against the Ladyjacks. She hit 4-of-7 from the floor and went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

On the night Boise State shot 34.4 percent (22-of-64) from the floor, 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from the arc and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the charity stripe. Stephen F. Austin countered at 41.3 percent (26-of-63) shooting from the floor, 50 percent (12-of-24) from beyond the 3-point arc and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free-throw line.

Four Ladyjacks reached double-figure points led by Porsha Roberts with a double-double on 27 points and team-high 12 rebounds. Tierany Henderson also recorded a double-double on 14 points and 10 boards, followed by 12 points from Kali Jerrell and 10 from Daylyn Harris.
