LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State’s rally from 10 points down came up short as the Broncos lost 61-56 to the Wyoming Cowgirls Tuesday afternoon in the Reese’s Mountain West Basketball Championships in Las Vegas. Down 58-48 with 2:56 to play, the Broncos used an 8-0 run to pull within two points, 58-56, with 1:20 remaining, but could get no closer. The loss eliminates fourth-seeded Boise State from the tournament as the Broncos finish the year 17-13 overall.

Deanna Weaver led the Broncos with 17 points, career-high 15 rebounds, one assists and career-high three blocks in 37 minutes of action. Miquelle Askew followed with 12 points and six rebounds, while Kayla Reinhart added 10 points and three boards.

“I thought Wyoming played a great game,” said head coach Presnell. “They were very aggressive. They penetrated the ball on us pretty much at will.
I thought that we competed. I thought we got ourselves back into it, showed the heart of our team. “

No one else reached double figure points for Boise State, however, Keiahnna Engel chipped in eight points and three rebounds. The Broncos finished the day shooting 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor, 20 percent (3-of-15) from the 3-point arc and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the free-throw line.

Wyoming shot 31.3 percent (20-of-64) from the floor, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (16-of-20) from the charity stripe. In addition to the free throw advantage for the Cowgirls, they also dominated the glass out rebounding the Broncos 45-to-35 and 16-to-5 in offensive boards.

Marquelle Dent led Wyoming with 23 points, four rebounds and six assists, followed by Kayla Woodward with 10 points and nine rebounds. Fallon Lewis added a team-high 10 rebounds to go with nine points.

Wyoming opened the contest by scoring the first five points and eventually ran out to a 8-2 lead by the 17:28 mark. However, Boise State responded with a 12-0 run to go up over the Cowgirls 14-8 on the second of two back-to-back field goals by Brooke Pahukoa at 11:26.

Wyoming rallied out scoring the Broncos 13-4 over the next seven minutes to take a 21-18 advantage with four and half minutes to play in the period. Askew gave the Broncos a 22-21 lead following two short jumpers, the last coming at 2:27.

The Cowgirls eventually took a 25-24 lead into the break, but not until Weaver was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 2.7 seconds left. The junior stepped to the line and hit 2-of-3 to pull the Broncos to within one at halftime.

The second half started sluggish for Boise State who found itself down nine points, 37-28, seven minutes in. The Broncos trailed by 7-to-10 points for most the way after that until late in the game.

Down 10 points at 58-48 with 2:56 to play, Boise State rallied closing to 58-56 with 1:20 to go. They had a chance to tie the game with 32 seconds remaining but a Weaver shot was slightly deflected and the rebound went to the Cowgirls. Wyoming then held the Broncos off from the foul line to claim the win.
