BOISE, Idaho - Boise State women’s basketball fell 71-51 at home to Mountain West Conference leader Colorado State Wednesday night in Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos opened strong taking an 11-2 lead early, then watch the Rams take over with their size and experience to claim the win. Lexie Der led Boise State with team-highs for points with 20, rebounds with nine, assists with two and one block. The Broncos fall to 14-10 overall and 9-4 in MW play, while Colorado State improved to 21-4 on the year and 13-1 in league.

Der led Boise State by scoring nearly half of the Broncos’ points in the second half recording 16 of the team’s 34. She finished the night shooting 7-of-12 from the floor with one 3-pointer, as well as going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

After Der the Broncos had Miquelle Askew and Keiahnna Engel net eight points each, Askew added six rebounds to her points. Deanna Weaver was held to two points and a team-second-best seven boards.

Boise State as a team shot 39.6 percent (19-of-48) from the floor, season-low 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from beyond the arc and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, CSU countered at 40 percent (26-of-65) shooting from the floor, 40 percent (8-of-20) from the arc and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the charity stripe.

Colorado State had four players finish in double-figure scoring led by AJ Newton with 15, followed by Gritt Ryder with 12, Caitlin Duffy with 11 and Elin Gustavsson with 10 and a team-high eight rebounds. The key stat was the Rams forcing 25 Bronco turnovers with 16 steals and converting the Boise State miscues into a 25-to-2 advantage in points.

Boise State opened the first half fast racing out to a 11-2 lead following a short Lexie Der jumper with 15:41 showing on the clock. The Broncos then began to struggle holding onto the ball committing 15 of their turnovers in the first half. Boise State finished the period scoring only six more points.

Colorado State rallied with a 12-2 run to take a 14-13 lead on a Elin Gustavsson jumper with 5:25 left. The Rams went into halftime out scoring the Broncos 24-6 in the final 15 minutes of the period for a 26-17 scoreboard advantage at intermission.

The second half began as the Broncos closed to within three points, 31-28, on a pair of Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego free throws with 14:41 remaining.

The Rams then responded with a 18-7 run to pull away from Boise State taking a 14-point, 49-35, lead with just over eight minutes to go. Colorado State then kept a double-digit lead the rest of the way stretching it out to a game-high 22-points on two occasions, the last came at 71-49 with 35 seconds left in the contest.

Boise State remains in sole possession of second place in the MW standings following tonight’s loss and some key losses around the league. Next up, the Broncos will head to Las Vegas this weekend where they will take on the UNLV Lady Rebels (10-15, 7-6 MW) in Cox Pavilion at 3 p.m. (Mountain). UNLV lost 65-58 at New Mexico this evening.
