Boise State Runs Wild in 21-Point Win Over Utah State

BOISE, Idaho - Miquelle Askew recorded her third double-double of the year to lead Boise State to a dominating 21-point 83-62 victory over the Utah State Aggies in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game in Bronco Gym at Boise. The sophomore center scored a career-high 34 points, three shy of tying the school record, to go with a career-tying 13 rebounds. Boise State used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to take control racing out to a 29-10 lead and never looked back.

The win in front of a sale out crowd of 1,006 black clad fans for a Boise State “BLACK OUT” improved the Broncos to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in league play. The victory over the Aggies along with San Jose State’s upset over Fresno State gives Boise State sole possession of second place in the MW standings.

Askew was on fire against the Aggies scoring 12 first half points then exploded for 22 more in the final 20 minutes as she shot 12-of-20 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Keiahnna Engel followed with 13 points going 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, while Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego added 10 points.

Deanna Weaver chipped in with nine points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Lexie Der had five points, seven rebounds, team-high five assists, one block and three steals.

Boise State finished the day shooting 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the floor, 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from the 3-point line and a season-high 90.9 percent (20-of-22) from the free-throw line. It was only the fourth time all season that the Broncos had more free throws than the opponent. The Broncos won the battle in the paint out scoring Utah State 32-to-20. They also won the glass by out rebounding the Aggies 42-to-37.

Utah State shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the court, 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the 3-point line and 75 percent (6-of-8) from the charity stripe. Jennifer Schlott entered the game as the sixth-ranked scorer nationally averaging 25 points per game, she was held to team-high 15 points by the Broncos. She was followed by Elise Nelson with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Makenlee Williams added 10 points.

The first half was all Boise State as the Broncos opened on fire and never let up until late in the period. Boise State hit four 3-pointers in its first six made shots to go up 16-6 by the 15:17 mark.

The Broncos extended their advantage to a half-high 21 points 35-14 on a pair of Askew free throws with 4:23 left. Down 21, the Aggies made a late rally attempt rolling off a 13-4 run to pull within 12 points, 39-27, at the break.

The second period opened with the Broncos going on a 12-0 run to put the game away up 51-27. The score stayed between 20 and 26 points most of the way in the final half as Boise State coasted to its sixth-consecutive home win.

Next up for Boise State is a road trip to Albuquerque, N.M., to take on the New Mexico Lobos Wednesday night in the Broncos lone game of the week.
