COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Keiahnna Engel and Kenna McDavis set new career scoring highs with 15 points each to lead Boise State to a 77-63 victory in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game at Air Force Wednesday night. Engel led the Broncos in the first half with 14 points as Boise State took control of the game taking a 22-point advantage into halftime. With the game already in hand Boise State was forced to hold off a fierce Air Force rally attempt in the second period as they pulled to within 12, 75-63, with 1:21 to play, but they could get no closer.
Boise State extended its win streak to five with the win as the Broncos improved to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in league play. Next up for Boise State is a Saturday afternoon home game against the UNLV Lady Rebels who are tied with the Broncos in the MW standings for second.
Engel and McDavis each made three 3-pointers during the contest as they combined for 30 points. Engel shot 5-of-8 from the floor and went 3-of-3 from the arc during the game. Meanwhile, McDavis shot 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from 3-point range as she became the ninth Bronco to lead the team in scoring this season.
Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego followed with 12 points, nine in the second half, to go with a team-high five assists and career-high four steals. Miquelle Askew was the fourth Bronco to reach double digit points with 11 to go with five rebounds. Deanna Weaver was held to eight points just missing a double-double as she grabbed a team-high 10 boards. Lexie Der and Kayla Reinhart each added seven points, Der also had five rebounds.
Boise State finished the night shooting 49.2 percent (30-61) from the court, 44.4 percent (8-18) from the arc and 56.3 percent (9-16) from the free-throw line. Air Force hit 42.9 percent in the game, 17.6 percent (3-17) from beyond the arc and 63.2 percent (12-19) from the charity stripe. Four Falcons reached double figure points led by Jimi Blagowsky with 19, followed by Lindsey Lewis with 14, Missy Byrd with 13 and Camille Thompson with 10.
Boise State dominated the paint out scoring Air Force 34 to 18, second chance points went the Broncos way 18 to 13 as the blue and orange out rebounded their host 37 to 36. Boise State’s bench out scored Air Force’s 24-13.
After a slow start the Broncos seized control of the game midway through the period. Up 14-10 with 11:14 remaining on the clock Boise State used a 16-6 run to put distance between itself and Air Force going up 14 points at 30-16. The Broncos closed the first half on another run, this time 11-1 in the final three minutes to take a commanding 22-point, 41-19, advantage into halftime.
Keiahnna Engel led the Broncos in the first 20 minutes scoring 14 points to tie her career high. She scored the majority of those points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc. Boise State shot 54.5 percent from the 3-point arc making 6-of-11 attempts in the half.
The second half saw Boise State stretch its lead out to 24 points twice early in the period, the last came at 44-20 with 17:46 left. The next 12 minutes would see the teams trade little runs as Boise State placed it in cruise control.
However, the Falcons would not give up as they made one last final rally attempt in the final five minutes closing from 20 down to within 12 points, 75-63 with 1:21 remaining. But that was as close as they would get as the Broncos claimed the 77-63 victory to win its third straight road game of the year after dropping its first six.
