LOGAN, Utah - Lexie Der recorded her third double-double of the year to lead Boise State’s rally over Utah State in 71-68 Mountain West Conference victory at Logan, Utah, for the Broncos first road win of the season. Boise State opened ice cold missing its first 14 shots to go down 13-0 midway through the first half. Boise State rallied to take a 30-23 halftime lead, then held off the Aggies in a second period which saw four lead changes and four ties. It took two Keiahnna Engel free throws with 4 seconds left to secure the win for the blue and orange. Boise State improves to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in MW play, Utah State goes to 8-8 on the year and 2-3 in league.
Der finished the game with team-highs for points and rebounds with 19 and 11, respectively. The redshirt sophomore scored 13 of her points in a back and forth second period, including a huge 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to give Boise State a 67-66 lead. Der went 6-of-13 from the floor, 2-of-3 from the arc and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Deanna Weaver was held to four points and six shots in the first half, but came alive when the Broncos needed her. Weaver recorded eight of her 12 points in the final 7:18 of the contest when the game was on the line. The junior also added a team and career-high six assists.
Miquelle Askew added 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. The 6-3 center from South Jordan, Utah, also grabbed seven rebounds and two steals.
Yaiza Rodriguez chipped in nine points, three rebounds and five assists. Keiahnna Engel had seven points, three boards and three assists, while Kayla Reinhart had six points and Kenna McDavis followed with five.
Boise State finished the night shooting 36.5 percent (23-63) from the floor, 37.5 percent (9-24) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (16-20) from the charity stripe. The Broncos dominated the glass by a 42 to 31 margin, 16 to five in offensive boards which was good for a 19 to four advantage in second chance points.
Utah State hit 46.4 percent (26-56) from the floor, 14.3 percent (2-14) from the arc and 77.8 percent (14-18) from the free-throw line. Jennifer Schlott led the Aggies with 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Franny Vaaulu added 10 points and Stephanie Bairstow had nine to go with a team-high eight rebounds.
The first half was one that saw the Broncos go from ice to fire as they opened 0-14 in field goals in the first nine and half minutes to go down 13-2, the lone points were Askew free throws. Down 13 (15-2) with 10:33 on the clock Kayla Reinhart hit the first Boise State field goal, a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.
That sparked the Broncos who proceeded to roll off a 12-2 run to claw their way back into the game and pull within 17-14 with 6:51 left. After the Aggies hit a 3-pointer to go up 20-14, Boise State exploded with a 14-0 run that put the Broncos up 28-20.
By the end of the period the Broncos had completely recovered from being ice cold to being on fire out scoring the Aggies 28-8 in the final 10:33. After missing its first 14 shots of the game Boise State went 10-of-19 with four 3-pointers to close the half.
The second half saw the Aggies storm out of the locker room with a 10-3 run to tie the score at 33 with 17:12 to go. The Broncos regrouped with a 8-0 run for a 41-33 advantage powered by 3-pointers from Rodriguez and Der.
Utah State came back again with a 13-4 run to take its first lead of the half at 46-45 when Schlott hit a layup with 9:14 to play. Boise State regained the lead and stretched it to a eight-point advantage, 62-54, on a Engel 3-pointer from the left corner with 5:02 on the clock.
The Aggies would not go away as they came back to take the lead following a 12-2 run. Schlott gave Utah State the advantage when she hit another layup with 48 seconds left to put the Aggies up 66-64.
Boise State rallied in the final moments when Der hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds to go giving the Broncos a 67-66 lead. The Broncos then made 4-of-4 free throws as Weaver hit a pair followed by Engel’s game clinching shots with 4 seconds left.
