BOISE, Idaho - Deanna Weaver led Boise State Wednesday night with a career-high 25 points as the Broncos dominated San Diego State 73-64 in their Mountain West homer opener at Taco Bell Arena. Weaver led all scorers and went 8-of-16 from the floor as the Broncos claimed their first ever victory over the defending MW champions. Tied at 14 with 10 minutes to go in the first half Boise State took control of the game out scoring the Aztecs 25 to 12 for a 39-26 halftime lead.
The Broncos were never really threatened in the second period leading by as many as 17 points with six minutes to play. San Diego State did attempt to rally late in the game pulling to within eight points on two occasions. Boise State improved to 6-7 overall with the win and 1-1 in conference, San Diego State fell to 3-9 on the year and 0-2 in MW play. Next up for the Broncos is a road trip to Laramie, Wyo., for a Saturday afternoon encounter with the Wyoming Cowgirls (10-3, 1-1 MW).
Weaver continued her dominating performances in league play leading the Broncos for the second straight contest finishing with 25 points, a Boise State career high, to go with a team and career-high eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Miquelle Askew battling the flu all week returned to double figure scoring with 13 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Keiahnna Engel added nine points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kenna McDavis contributed eight points and three boards, while Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego had seven points, two rebounds and team-high six assists.
Boise State finished the night shooting 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor, 42.9 percent (9-21) from beyond the arc and 81.8 percent (18-22) from the free-throw line. The game was a turnoverfest with each team giving it away 24 times, but the Broncos held a 29-23 edge in points off turnovers. The blue and orange also held the advantage on the glass out rebounding the Aztecs 36-32 for a slight 13 to nine edge in second chance points.
San Diego State shot 38 percent (19-50) from the floor, 30 percent (3-10) from the 3-point line and 74.2 percent (23-31) from the charity stripe. Danesha Long led three Aztecs in double figure scoring with 14, followed by Khristina Hunter with 12 and Chairese Culberson with 11.
The first half opened as a tight battle with four ties and three lead changes before the Broncos took control. With the game tied at 14 with 10:17 to go, Boise State picked up the pressure and dominated the final 10 minutes of the half out scoring the Aztecs 25 to 12, claiming a 13 point 39-26 advantage at the break. Weaver led the Broncos with a team-high 16 points in the opening 20 minutes on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, McDavis added eight points.
The Aztecs focused on shutting Weaver down in the second period holding her to nine points. However, that left Askew open and she responded with 12 of her 13 points in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Boise State led most of the second half by double digits until late in the game. Boise State took a game-high lead with 6:08 to play up 17 points at 62-45 on a pair of Askew free throws.
San Diego State rallied pulling to within eight points twice in the final 3:10 of the game, the first was at 64-56 and the second came 25 seconds later at 66-58. The Aztecs could get no closer as Boise State put the game away from the free-throw line hitting 5-of-6, Weaver was 4-of-4, in the final 2:17 with one Rodriguez Ortego jumper mixed in with 1:52 on the clock.
