Der and Lenhardt Lead Boise State's Rally Over C of I in 61-47 Win
The duo combined for 33 points and 25 rebounds as Broncos rallied from 15 down.
BOISE, Idaho - Lexie Der and Lauren Lenhardt led Boise State to a 61-47 come from behind victory over the College of Idaho Wednesday night in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. Der, a redshirt freshman, and Lenhardt, a senior, were instrumental in the Broncos victory over the Coyotes as they combined for 33 points and 25 rebounds as the duo led the Broncos to the win over the NAIA's No. 22 ranked Coyotes. Der recorded her first double-double on career-highs for points and rebounds with 20 and 14 respectively, while Lenhardt followed with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
After a slow start to the game, Boise State rallied from 15 down to defeat the Coyotes with a strong second half where the Broncos outscored the visitors 37-15 to claim the victory. The win in Boise State's final nonconference game of the season improved its record to 7-6 overall, with the conference opener up next when the Wyoming Cowgirls come to town on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Der did most of her damage from the free-throw line where she hit 12-of-13 attempts to go with four field goals. The Burnaby, British Columbia, native came alive in the second period recording 16 points and 10 rebounds during the half.
Lenhardt recorded six of her points and seven of the rebounds in the final 20 minutes as well. It was the fourth double-double of the year for the senior from Eagle, Idaho, who finished hitting six-of-18 from the floor.
Julia Marshall added a solid performance as well with nine points, four rebounds, team-high five assists and three steals. Miquelle Askew scored the first six points of the second half for the Broncos to spark the rally, she finished with eight points and five boards. Rosalie Cutri did not score alot but she finish with seven rebounds, three assists and a team-high five steals to go with three points.
Neither team ended the game shooting well as Boise State finished hitting 29.5 percent from the floor, six percent from the arc and 73.7 percent from the charity stripe. The College of Idaho shot 29.8 percent from the floor, 35.7 percent from the 3-point line and 61.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Felicity Jones led the Coyotes with a game-high 21 points, to go with six rebounds, two assists and five steals. Dayna Drager was the only other Yote in double figure points with 14.
The College of Idaho led the entire way during the opening 20 minutes as the Broncos struggled to get their shots to fall. The Coyotes used an 8-0 run to take control early turning a 4-4 tie into a 12-4 advantage five minutes into the game. The C of I eventually took a game-high 15 point lead with 3:08 left in the first half up 32-17. Boise State scored the final seven points of the first period as the Broncos trailed 32-24 at halftime.
The second half saw Askew open the period with three straight Bronco field goals for a 6-0 run to pull her team to within four points. Then after a couple of Coyote field goals, Der returned to the game and began her move. Down nine points at 39-30 with 14:16 on the clock, Der scored 12 of the Broncos next 16 points over a span of seven minutes to give Boise State a 46-44 lead. She scored the go ahead points with 7:29 left to give her team its first scoreboard advantage in the contest.
Boise State closed out the game over a good College of Idaho team by out scoring the Coyotes 15-3 during the final seven and a half minutes as the Broncos claimed the 61-47 victory.
