THREE BRONCO WRESTLERS REACH QUARTERFINALS AT SOUTHERN SCUFFLE

                GREENSBORO, North Carolina Adam Hall, Tyler Sherfey and Kurt Swartz all reached the quarterfinals to lead Boise State University to fifth place in the team standings after the first day of competition of the Southern Scuffle wrestling tournament.

                The Broncos scored 47 points on Saturday (Dec. 29) to hold a one point lead over sixth place Cornell University.  Defending NCAA national champion University of Minnesota leads the team standings with 86.5 points followed by Old Dominion University with 53.5 points, Bloomsburg with 49 and Hofstra University with 48.5.

                A freshman from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Hall moved into the quarterfinals of the 149-pound weight class by pinning Kevin Christensen of Ohio University at the 2:03 mark of his match and posting a major decision over Steve Fehnel of the University of Maryland 11-5.  Hall, seeded No. 5 in his weight class, next faces Mitch Smith of Hofstra University.

                Sherfey, a junior Kennewick, Wash., recorded 10-0 major decisions over Daniel Alejandro of Cal State Bakersfield and Kyle Artusio of the University of Virginia to reach the quarterfinals of the 157-pound weight class.  Sherfey is seeded fourth and next faces fifth seed Matt Moley of Bloomsburg.

                Seeded sixth in the 165-pound weight class, Swartz had to win three matches on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals.  He won his first two matches by pin winning at the 4:12 mark of his bout with Rickey Schmelyun of Bloomsburg and at the 2:24 mark of his match against Greg Scott of George Mason University.  He moved into his quarterfinal match against No. 3 seed Kurt Gross of Kent State on Sunday with a 6-4 decision over Aaron Glover of Duke University.

                Six other Bronco wrestlers are still alive in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes.  They include Cory Fish at 133 pounds, Johnny Nunez at 165 pounds, Nate Lee at 174 pounds, Matt Casperson at 184 pounds, Ryan Allen at 197 pounds and Nick Smith in the heavyweight class.

                Competition concludes on Sunday (Dec. 30) on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
