Three Bronco Wrestlers Advance to Quarterfinals
GREENSBORO, N.C. Sophomores Andy Patrick and Tyler Sherfey and freshman Luke Smith reached the quarterfinals of the Southern Scuffle, Friday, a two-day tournament that features eight ranked teams and 62 individuals ranked in the top 20.
Wrestling at 157 pounds, Sherfey, the nation’s 20th-ranked individual, opened with a shutout major decision over Virginia’s Mike Sewell (9-0). After pinning Steve Wiktorek of Campbell (4:52) to advance to the Round of 16, Sherfey moved onto the quarters with a 5-2 decision over Daniel Alejandro of Cal State-Bakersfield.
Patrick, No. 15 at 285 pounds in the latest USA Today/Intermat/NCWA Division I rankings, advanced to the quarterfinal round with decisions over Jack Danilkowicz of Virginia (9-2) and Joe Sheffield of UNC Greensboro (4-2).
In the Broncos’ biggest upset of the day, Smith knocked off the nation’s 17th-ranked 165-pounder, Jason Kiessling of Maryland, in a 9-7 overtime decision in the Round of 16. Smith advanced to the third round via decision over Ohio’s Jacob Ison (8-6) and major decision over Craig McIntosh of UNC-Greensboro in a 10-0 shutout victory.
As a team the Broncos ended the first day of competition in 12th place with 31.5 points, five points back of the top 10. Minnesota leads the tournament with 59.5 points.
Still alive in the tournament are Jeff Newby at 141 pounds, Brad Muri at 157 pounds, Nate Lee at 174 pounds, and Matt Casperson at 197 pounds.
After losing his opening round match, Newby has won three consecutive matches in the consolation bracket. Muri, who lost in the Round of 16, handed Campbell’s Wiktorek his second pin of the day at the hands of a Bronco (1:55) in his first consolation match.
After dropping a match to the nation’s eighth-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, Lee won his only consolation match of the day via decision. Casperson, after losing in the Round of 32, posted two consecutive pins in the wrestleback rounds, defeating Ed Backus of Binghamton (2:15) and Harry Zander of George Mason (2:41).
Saturday’s quarterfinal matches are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., with the semifinals at 11:30 a.m., and the championship matches at 6:30 p.m. All times are eastern.
