RENO, Nev. - The Boise State wrestling team earned an eighth-place finish at the 15th annual Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev. on Sunday (Dec. 20), as the Broncos had two runner-up finishes with four wrestlers placing in the top six for their respective weight class.
Boise State tallied 57.0 team points to place eighth in the 25 team field. Oklahoma State finished first in the team standings with 154.0 points. The Broncos were led by sophomore Jason Chamberlain and junior Adam Hall, who both fell just short of winning individual titles.
Chamberlain wrestled to his 149-pound runner-up finish with a 4-1 record on the day. After advancing through the first three matches of the tournament, Chamberlain took down Pac-10 Conference opponent, Barrett Abel of UC Davis, 6-3 to earn a spot in the title round. Chamberlain would fight hard but came up just short of winning his first tournament title of the year, losing a 3-1 decision to Frank Molinaro of Penn State.
Hall also finished the weekend with a 4-1 record at 157 pounds, falling just two points shy of bringing home his first individual title of the season as well. Hall advanced to the final round with a 2-0 decision in the semifinals against Thomas Scotton of North Carolina. In the finals Hall would meet Cyler Sanderson (Penn State), where Hall would end up on the wrong end of an exciting final match, losing to Sanderson in a 3-2 decision.
Boise State also had two wrestlers reach the fifth-place match for their respective weight class, as Michael Cuthbertson finished fifth at 165 pounds and Alan Bartelli placed sixth at 125 pounds. Cuthbertson finished with a 4-2 record, while Bartelli was 4-3.
The Broncos are off the mat now over Christmas break and will return to competition, Jan. 9-10 when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to wrestle in the National Duals.
