LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Three Boise State wrestlers advanced through the quarterfinal round at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Friday, Dec. 5, in Las Vegas, Nev. Andrew Hochstrasser (133-pounds), Adam Hall (157) and Kirk Smith (184) all finished Friday with a 3-0 record and will continue their championship pursuit Saturday morning in the tournament semifinals.
Hochstrasser, who is 11-0 this season in tournament action (15-0 overall), continued his early domination with two impressive opening matches. He defeated Arizona State’s Orlando Jimenez 8-0 in his first round match before taking down Marques Bravo (Western State) by fall (2:55) in the second round.
Hall, who also remains undefeated in tournament competition this season (11-0), will represent Boise State in the 157-pound semifinals Saturday morning.
Smith opened the tournament with two dominating matches, defeating Wesley Bergman of Ohio State by major decision, 16-3, and Ernesto Ancona of Cal State-Bakersfield by major decision, 19-6. Smith has also yet to lose a match this season (18-0 overall, 10-0 tournament).
As a team, Boise State has nine wrestlers who will continue still be competing on Saturday. Jason Chamberlain (149) and Tyler Sherfey (165) each need just one more win to place in the tournament. Both wrestlers lost their first match of the weekend in quarterfinals action Friday evening.
Also wrestling for the Broncos are Alan Bartelli (125), Eli Hutchison (141), Kurt Swartz (174) and Sam Zylstra (HWT). All four wrestlers will continue consolation bracket competition on Saturday.
Entering the quarterfinal round, Boise State held a tie for third-place (34.0 points) with Indiana University. The University of Nebraska led the way with 38.5 points. Wrestling will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (PT) with the championship matches scheduled for 5 p.m. (PT).
