Three Broncos Advance to Round of 16 at Las Vegas Invite
PRIMM, Nev. Boise State University sophomores Tyler Sherfey (157 lbs.) and Andy Patrick (HWT), and freshman Matt Casperson (197 lbs.) each advanced to the Round of 16 before dropping to their respective consolation brackets at the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Saturday.
All eight of the Bronco wrestlers either won their first round match or received a bye to advance to the Round of 32.
Patrick, ranked No. 14 in the nation at heavyweight, got his tournament started off with a bang, pinning his opening round opponent, Jeff Schossow of Adams State, in 5:46. Patrick then defeated Thor Moen of Arizona State via a 12-4 decision. After dropping his Round of 16 match, Patrick knocked off Jordan Hein of Wisconsin in a tight 1-0 decision. His run at a third consecutive top three tournament finish was ended, however, with a 3-2 loss to Dustin Rogers of West Virginia.
Sherfey, the nation’s 12th-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, received a bye in the opening round, and then teched Dustin Olsen of Utah Valley State (21-5) to advance. After dropping his Round of 16 match, Sherfey won by major decision (14-5) over Taylor Torisk of Adams State. His tournament run came to an end with a loss to Joe Ellenberger of Nebraska-Kearney (7-5).
After pinning Embry-Riddle’s Graham Weston in 1:26 to open the invitational, Casperson defeated Jared Boyer of Stanford by decision (8-6) in overtime. In the Round of 16, Casperson lost by decision (13-8), and then dropped his first consolation match to Harvard’s Jonathon Butler in a 3-1 decision.
Sophomore Cory Fish (125 lbs.), freshmen Jeff Newby (141 lbs.) and Nate Lee (174 lbs.) and senior Mike Casperson (184 lbs.) each advanced in the tournament with victories in their respective opening matches, but lost in the Round of 32 to drop to the consolation bracket. Freshman Luke Smith (165 lbs.) received a bye in the tournament’s opening round, but also failed to advance beyond the Round of 32.
Smith won his first two consolation matches, the first by default and the second by forfeit, but dropped his third consolation match to Pennsylvania’s Zach Shanaman in a 14-11 decision.
After winning his first consolation match in a 5-0 shutout of Western State’s Darren Hockett, Fish was ousted by Richard Byrd of Embry-Riddle in a 6-3 decision. Lee and Mike Casperson each also won their first round consolation matches, Lee by major decision (16-4) and Casperson by a 10-4 decision. However, neither was able to win their second round consolation match. Newby dropped his first consolation match to end his run in the tournament.
