Broncos Shine at Old Chicago Open

GREELEY, Colo. - The Boise State wrestling team concluded its weekend trip to Greeley, Colo. in impressive fashion, Saturday (Nov. 20), as the Broncos won five individual titles and two consolation championships at the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open.

Alan Bartelli, Stefan St. Marie, Josh Strait, Kurt Swartz and Jake Swartz all captured individual crowns on Saturday finishing with perfect records at the tournament. Bartelli won the 125-pound title with a 4-0 record, beating teammate Isaac Romero by 5-2 decision in the championship match. St. Marie, meanwhile, wrestled to a 3-0 record at 133 pounds which included a pin (3:34) against Chad Lousberg (Colorado School of Mines) in the final round.

Josh Strait emerged victorious in the 141-pound bracket after winning five straight matches to secure the title. Along the way he beat fellow Bronco Eli Hutchison in the semifinals before taking down Casey Cruz (Northern Colorado), 5-2, in the finals. Hutchison would rebound in consolation action, beating teammate Brad Perry, 7-3, in the consolation championship match.

Boise State's next individual title would come at 165 pounds, where Kurt Swartz also finished the weekend 4-0. He would face fellow teammate Michael Cuthbertson in the championship match, which turned out to be one of the most exciting matchups of the weekend. Swartz needed overtime before finally prevailing 3-1 over Cuthbertson.

Jake Swartz would earn the final individual title for the Broncos at 174 pounds. He finished his championship run by beating Trent Zempel (Chadron State) by fall at the 4:09 mark in the final match.

Boise State also enjoyed a great deal of success at heavyweight, as redshirt freshman Toby Erickson wrestled his way to a runner-up finish with a 3-1 record. His only loss of the day would come against teammate JT Felix, who is using his redshirt season and wrestled unattached. Felix beat Erickson by 4-1 decision to win the title. Felix also beat fellow Bronco Chris Givens on his way to the finals. Givens would rebound however, wrestling his way to the consolation title.
