Boise, Idaho - The Boise State wrestling team showed its strength Wednesday night with a 34-10 win in its home opener against Utah Valley University at Bronco Gymnasium. Boise State (4-0) earned wins in eight matches against the Wolverines (0-2) while keeping their dual record perfect on the season.

Bronco heavyweight Sam Zylstra got things started for Boise State with a win by fall against Diego Avalon in the second period. After a scoreless first period, Zylstra scored a one-point escape and a two-point take down before recording the win.

Boise State’s first loss of the night came in the 125-pound match between Boise State’s Alan Bartelli and UVU’s Ben Kjar, who is currently ranked No. 20 nationally. Kjar wrestled to a 12-3 decision with four take downs in the match.

At 133-pounds sophomore Andrew Hochstrasser started fast and finished hard, defeating UVU’s Flint Ray by technical fall in the third. Hochstrasser scored four take down points in the first period, which he followed with a 9-2 scoring advantage in the second. His win gave Boise State an 11-4 lead in the dual.

Boise State’s Cory Fish earned the third Bronco victory of the night in the 141-pound match, when he defeated Jeffrey Newby with a 6-1 decision. Fish scored a two-point take down in the first to open the match and carried a 2-1 lead into the third. Fish secured the victory with a 4-0 third period.

In the 149-pound match true freshman Jason Chamberlain earned his first dual win of the season with a 10-4 decision over Justin Morrill of UVU. Chamberlain outscored Morrill 4-1 in the first period and 5-3 in the third to secure the win and give Boise State a 17-4 lead on the night.

Bronco sophomore Brad Muri took care of Wade Eldredge in the 157-pound match, 13-3. Muri jumped out to a 6-0 lead after a strong first period in which he recorded a two-point take down, a three-point near fall and scored a penalty point.

In the 165-pound match Boise State’s Tyler Sherfey needed just one period of work to earn an injury default win against Jamison Moss. Sherfey scored a two-point take down just over one minute into the match before Moss was forced to withdraw from the match with a shoulder injury.

In the closest match of the night, Boise State’s Kurt Swartz managed to fend off a strong third period by UVU’s Brad Darrington and hold on for a 6-4 decision. Darrington evened the match 4-4 with a two-point reversal with just over 30 seconds left in the match. Swartz countered, however, scoring a two-point reversal of his own with 11 seconds left, sealing the win.

Boise State’s final win of the night came at 184-pounds as Kirk Smith defeated UVU’s Casen Eldredge with an 18-6 major decision. After a slow start, Smith took advantage of seven take down scores in the second and third periods en route to his third dual win of the season.

UVU earned its second win of the night in the final match, 197-pounds, as Adam Fager defeated Boise State’s Ryan Allen by fall (4:55).

Boise State returns to the road this weekend with a majority of the team heading to Ithaca, N.Y. for the Body Bar tournament Saturday (Nov. 22), before facing a set of duals on Sunday (Nov. 23).
