Boise, Idaho - The Boise State wrestling team showed its strength Wednesday night with a 34-10 win in its home opener against Utah Valley University at Bronco Gymnasium. Boise State (4-0) earned wins in eight matches against the Wolverines (0-2) while keeping their dual record perfect on the season.
Bronco heavyweight Sam Zylstra got things started for Boise State with a win by fall against Diego Avalon in the second period. After a scoreless first period, Zylstra scored a one-point escape and a two-point take down before recording the win.
Boise State’s first loss of the night came in the 125-pound match between Boise State’s Alan Bartelli and UVU’s Ben Kjar, who is currently ranked No. 20 nationally. Kjar wrestled to a 12-3 decision with four take downs in the match.
At 133-pounds sophomore Andrew Hochstrasser started fast and finished hard, defeating UVU’s Flint Ray by technical fall in the third. In the 165-pound match Boise State’s Tyler Sherfey needed just one period of work to earn an injury default win against Jamison Moss. Sherfey scored a two-point take down just over one minute into the match before Moss was forced to withdraw from the match with a shoulder injury.
In the closest match of the night, Boise State’s Kurt Swartz managed to fend off a strong third period by UVU’s Brad Darrington and hold on for a 6-4 decision. Swartz countered, however, scoring a two-point reversal of his own with 11 seconds left, sealing the win.
Boise State’s final win of the night came at 184-pounds as Kirk Smith defeated UVU’s Casen Eldredge with an 18-6 major decision. After a slow start, Smith took advantage of seven take down scores in the second and third periods en route to his third dual win of the season.
