No. 2 Broncos Tie No. 22 Beavers, 18-18, in Home Opener

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State wrestling team's home opener couldn't have been any more dramatic as the No. 2 ranked Broncos (1-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 Pac-10) needed a major decision victory in the final match of the night to secure an 18-18 tie with No. 22 Oregon State (0-0-1, 0-0-1), Saturday (Nov. 13) night, at Taco Bell Arena.

Despite jumping out in front of the Beavers 14-0 after the first four matches, Boise State watched its lead slowly diminish with five consecutive losses. Heading into the 133-pound match, the Broncos needed at least a major decision by No. 1 nationally ranked (InterMat) Andrew Hochstrasser to avoid their first defeat of the season.

Hochstrasser delivered with an 11-0 victory against No. 14 Kelly Kubec to secure the tie, but was unable to turn multiple near falls into a dual winning pin. Hochstrasser scored a three-point near fall with just 00:30 remaining in the second, as well as another three-point near fall with 00:25 to go in the third. Kubec managed to avoid the pin, however, giving Oregon State a tie against the nation's second ranked team.

Boise State gained its early lead over the Beavers with wins in the first four matches of the night. No. 12 Levi Jones scored the first Bronco victory at 141 pounds with a 9-8 decision over Garrett Drucker. Jones scored the go-ahead point on an escape with just 00:38 left in the match.

No. 4 Jason Chamberlain would extend the Boise State lead with a hard fought 4-3 decision against Scott Sakaguchi at 149 pounds. Chamberlain fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie Sakaguchi at 3-3 as time expired in the third period. Chamberlain would score the victory with one point for riding time, giving the Broncos a 6-0 lead in the dual.

No. 1 Adam Hall gave Boise State its first big victory of the night as he knocked off Alex Elder by 22-7 technical fall at 157 pounds. He was followed by Michael Cuthbertson at 165 pounds, who managed a 4-3 decision against Jon Brascetta to put the Broncos on top, 14-0.

Oregon State would not go away quietly however, as the Beavers won at 174, 184, 197 and heavyweight to take their first lead of the dual, 15-14. No. 10 Colby Covington first beat Jake Swartz by 13-4 major decision at 174 pounds to narrow the team total to 14-4. Randy Larson would then fall to Brice Arand at 184 pounds, 12-5, to make the team score 14-7.

Chad Hanke gave Oregon State its third win of the night by beating Derek Toney, 13-3, at 197 pounds. The Beavers would capture their first lead of the dual next at heavyweight, as No. 12 Clayton Jack scored a 13-4 major decision over Toby Erickson.

With just two matches left to be wrestled, the drama hit full stride in Taco Bell Arena. Boise State's Alan Bartelli wrestled No. 13 Jason Lara to a thrilling double overtime match before falling in the third period, 3-2. Bartelli and Lara each score one point escapes in the first overtime to extend the match to a second extra session. After a scoreless first period, Lara earned an escape at 00:17 to take a 3-2 lead from Bartelli. Starting down in the third, Bartelli was unable to answer with an escape of his own, falling just short of the upset.

Hochstrasser's major decision next at 133 pounds would be enough to even the final team score, but fell just short of giving the Broncos a 2-0 start to their season.

Next on the schedule for Boise State is a trip to Greeley, Colo. next weekend (Nov. 19-20) to compete against Northern Colorado on Friday and in the UNC Old Chicago Open on Saturday. The Broncos are on the road now until late January when the return home to host Pacific-10 Conference opponent Cal Poly, Jan. 23 (Sunday) at 2 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.
