SPOKANE, Wash. - The No. 9 preseason ranked (intermatwrestle.com) Boise State wrestling team opened up the 2009-10 season on Saturday (Oct. 31) with a 30-12 win against North Idaho College at West Valley High School in Spokane, Wash.
The Broncos won seven matches in the dual, including four by major decision, one by fall and one by technical fall. Alan Bartelli started things off for the Broncos with a 10-2 major decision against Kyle McCrite at 125 pounds. He was following by Andrew Hochstrasser, who extended the Bronco lead with a pin (6:43) against Tracey Huffman at 133.
After dropping matches at 141 and 149 pounds, Boise State rebounded by winning five of the last six matches of the night. Jason Chamberlain earned a 13-2 major decision against Joey Pierotti at 157 pounds, which was followed by Adam Hall's 12-4 major dec. against Jesse Nielsen at 165.
In the 174-pound match Boise State's Michael Cuthbertson earned a 17-5 major decision against Steven Vasquez. He was followed by Kirk Smith, who won the 184-pound match against Celic Bell by technical fall (18-2). Heavyweight Sam Zylstra capped the evening off for the Broncos with a 4-3 decision over Roger McCovey to conclude the dual.
Boise State is set to host the University of Great Falls-Montana on Friday (Nov. 6), in one of just three home duals for the Broncos this season. The dual is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and will be held in Taco Bell Arena.
