The Boise State wrestling team kicked off the new season in impression fashion, Saturday night, with a decisive 38-3 win against the University of Northern Colorado in Spokane, Wash.
Eli Hutchison jumpstarted the Broncos with a pin of Lance Gallegos at the 03:25 mark in the 141-pound match. Boise State never looked back. Hutcheson’s pin was the first of two for Boise State on the night. Senior Tyler Sherfey recorded the Broncos’ second pin at 04:05 in the165-pound match against Tim Frank.
Boise State also recorded two wins by technical fall and two more by major decision. The first win by technical fall came at 174-pounds with Nate Lee’s 22-8 defeat of Brendan Counters. Andrew Hochstrasser earned the second of the night, 17-3, in the 133-pound match against Brett Mahe.
In the 157-pound match Boise State’s Adam Hall defeated Tanner Wicks by major decision, 10-2, while Kirk Smith also earned a major decision, 12-3, over Patrick Kerry at 197-pounds.
Also earning wins for Boise State was Nathaniel Holt, Kurt Swartz and Nick Smith. Holt defeated Mitchell Polkowske, 6-4, at 149-pounds, while Swartz defeated Ryan Johnson, 7-3, at 184-pounds. In the 285-pound match Nick Smith beat Justin Tuell, 6-0.
Boise State’s only loss of the night came at 125-pounds when Northern Colorado’s Tony Mustari beat Brian Owen, 1-0.
The broncos will finish their weekend road trip on Sunday, Nov. 2, in Great Falls, Mont. Boise State will face Montana State-Northern at 5:00 p.m. before taking on the University of Great Falls at 6:30 p.m.
