Smith to Join Hochstrasser at All-Star Classic

BOISE, Idaho - On Wednesday (Oct. 27), Boise State wrestler Kirk Smith was selected to compete in the 2010 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic in Fresno, Calif., joining teammate Andrew Hochstrasser as the second Bronco invited to participate in the prestigious fundraising event.

The NWCA All-Star Classic presented by The Marines is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. The event annually pits the top collegiate wrestlers head-to-head in an effort to raise money to help save college wrestling programs. This year's All-Star Classic will take place on Nov. 21 (Sunday) at Selland Arena.

Smith, a senior from Boise, Idaho (Centennial HS), was selected to the event after being voted the nation's top 184-pound wrestler in the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine preseason rankings. Smith is set to face No. 2 Joe LeBlanc of the University of Wyoming at the All-Star Classic.

The two wrestlers have met three times to date with Smith holding a 3-0 advantage in the series. Smith won the first two meetings by major decision, but won the third meeting last spring by a narrow 3-2 margin.

Smith is coming off his second All-American season at Boise State in which he wrestled to a national runner-up finish. Smith finished his junior year 29-1 with his only loss coming to Max Askren of Missouri in the championship match at the NCAA tournament. He also wrestled to All-American status as a freshman in 2008.

LeBlanc enters his junior season with the Cowboys as a two-time All-American as well. He finished fourth at the 2010 NCAA tournament and fifth in 2009. He concluded his sophomore campaign with a 39-6 overall record.

Smith will be just the seventh Boise State wrestler ever to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic, but is the second this year. He joins Hochstrasser who was announced to the line-up at 133 pounds last week. Hochstrasser, who is ranked No. 2 by W.I.N., will meet No. 1 Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State. The Broncos are still hoping to receive additional invitations to the event as only five of 10 matches have been announced to date. The NWCA will continue announcing one matchup each day through Nov. 3.
