Ivanov Set for Opening Round

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Boise State wrestler George Ivanov will begin his Olympic quest Friday, representing Bulgaria in men’s freestyle at 74 kilograms.

Ivanov is the last of a school-record six former or future Broncos to begin competition at the XXXI Oympiad. A seventh, Roderick Townsend, will compete at the Paralympics beginning Sept. 8.

Ivanov’s opening-round match will pit him against Georgia’s Jakob Makarashvili, and the bout is scheduled to begin at 7:48 a.m. MT.

The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 8:20 a.m., and the semifinals are scheduled to begin at 8:44 a.m. Repechage rounds are scheduled to begin at 1:02 p.m.

The bronze medal match is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the gold medal match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Ivanov earned his spot in Rio by capturing the silver medal in the 74kg freestyle class at the World Olympic Qualifier in Mongolia back in April. He is the second Boise State wrestler to compete at the Olympics, joining Charles Burton, who finished fifth in the 85kg class at the Sydney Games in 2000. In 2013, Ivanov was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Pac-12 Championships after capturing the conference title at 157 pounds.
