Nine Bronco Wrestlers to Compete at World Team Trials this Weekend

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State wrestling team will be well represented at this weekend's World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., as nine Bronco wrestlers will be competing to qualify for either the FILA Junior World Team or the University World Games. Three Boise State wrestlers will be competing in the junior trials this Friday-Saturday (May 28-29), while the other six will be wrestling in the university division.

The champions in each weight class at the University World Team Trials will advance to the University World Championships in Turin, Italy, Oct. 26-30. Champions in each weight class at the Junior World Team Trials will advance to the Junior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on July 20-25.

Highlighting the group of Boise State wrestlers that will be competing in the junior tournament is Jason Chamberlain, who just completed his sophomore season with the Broncos. Chamberlain is the defending 66 kg (145 pounds) FILA Junior World Team Trials champion. He will be joined in the Junior World Team Trials by redshirt freshmen Brock Gutches and Toby Erickson. Gutches will wrestle at 74 kg (163), while Erickson will compete at 120 kg (HWT). Jake Swartz, who is also a redshirt freshman, qualified for the trials but will not compete.

In the University World Team Trials, Boise State will be represented by a group of wrestlers that boasts three NCAA All-Americans. Seniors Andrew Hochstrasser (60 kg/132), Adam Hall (74 kg/163) and Kirk Smith (84 kg/184) will all compete this weekend for the chance to represent the United States at the University World Championships. Smith earned NCAA All-American status at 184 pounds in 2008 and 2010. Hochstrasser earned All-American honors in 2009 at 133 pounds, while Hall wrestled to All-American status at 157 pounds in 2010.

Hochstrasser, Smith and Hall will be joined in the freestyle tournament by Levi Jones (66 kg/145) and Derek Toney (120 kg/HWT). Eli Hutchison rounds out the group of Broncos competing in the University World Team Trials, as he will wrestle in the 66 kg grecco roman tournament.
