April 24, 2016

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia – Former Boise State wrestler George Ivanov won the silver medal at the World Olympic Qualifier while competing for Bulgaria Saturday, earning himself a trip to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ivanov is just the second Bronco wrestler to earn a spot in the Olympics, and the first since Charles Burton wrestled for the United States at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Ivanov, competing in freestyle at 74 kilograms (163 pounds), qualified with his semifinal victory over Mihaly Nagy of Hungary (10-7).

He dropped the gold medal match to Turkey’s Soner Demertis via technical fall (11-1).

Ivanov took home the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships, winning the conference title at 157 pounds.

The former Bronco spoke with BroncoSports.com in advance of the World Championships this past September. To read the Q&A, CLICK HERE.
