Six Bronco Wrestlers Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors
BOISE, Idaho - The Pac-10 Conference announced its 2010-11 All-Academic Wrestling Teams, Wednesday (April 6), which includes six Boise State wrestlers selected for their success in the classroom and contributions on the mat this season.
Alan Bartelli, Michael Cuthbertson, Adam Hall and Josh Strait all were named Pac-10 All-Academic first team, while Jacob Swartz was selected to the second team and Kirk Smith was tabbed as honorable mention.
In order to be eligible for Pac-10 All-Academic honors an individual must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be classified as either a starter or significant contributor.
Hall led the way in individual achievements for Boise State this season as the Bonners Ferry, Idaho (Bonners Ferry HS) native received his second Pac-10 academic honor of the spring. On March 28 Hall was named the Pac-10 Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his success on and off the mat. This season he wrestled to a 30-2 overall record, a fifth-place finish at the NCAA tournament, All-American honors and an individual Pac-10 title at 157 pounds. He is graduating this spring with a 3.50 GPA in Health Science.
Bartelli, a senior from Wasilla, Alaska (Wasilla HS), is a Pre-Dental/Biology major with a 3.37 overall GPA. He finished 2010-11 as a NCAA national qualifier at 125 pounds after wrestling to a 20-10 overall record and a third-place finish at the Pac-10 tournament.
Cuthbertson is a General Health Science major with a 3.52 GPA. The redshirt sophomore from Scottsboro, Ala. (Scottsboro HS) competed in 13 matches for Boise State this spring, including starting five duals for the Broncos at 165 pounds.
Strait rounds out the group of first team selections as the redshirt sophomore from Inkom, Idaho (Marsh Valley HS) has maintained a 3.78 GPA as a General Health Science major. Strait saw action in 19 matches at 141 pounds this season, which included starting two duals for Boise State.
Swartz, a redshirt freshman from Auburn, Wash. (Auburn HS), is the lone All-Academic second team nomination for the Broncos. He is an undeclared business major with a 3.34 cumulative GPA. Swartz concluded his first season in the Boise State starting lineup with a 20-16 overall record and a trip to the NCAA tournament. He started 14 duals at 174 pounds for the Broncos.
Smith completes the group of All-Academic nominees with an honorable mention selection. A senior from Boise, Idaho (Centennial HS), Smith wrestled sparingly this season for Boise State due to injury. He compiled an 8-2 record at 184 pounds.
