BOISE, Idaho - Boise State wrestler Kirk Smith received more national recognition, Wednesday (March 31) afternoon, as he was named the 2009-10 Pac-10 Wrestler of the Year by www.d1collegewrestling.net.
Smith, a Boise, Idaho (Centennial HS) native, just concluded an outstanding junior season wrestling at 184 pounds for the Broncos. After finishing the regular season with a perfect record (21-0), Smith wrestled to his second consecutive Pac-10 Conference Championship and a runner-up finish at the NCAA national tournament. He finished the season with a 28-1 overall record with his only loss coming against Missouri's Max Askren in the 184-pound national title match.
With his runner-up finish at nationals Smith earned All-American status for the second time in his career. He also received the honor after placing eighth as a true freshman. Smith will enter his final season at Boise State looking to put the finishing touches on an already remarkable career. Through three seasons as a Bronco Smith has wrestled to a 94-10 overall record.
