Broncos in 19th Place At NCAA Wrestling Champioships

St. Louis The Boise State University wrestling team is in 19th place with 18 points after session three of the NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mar. 21. The Broncos still have five wrestlers in the wrestleback portion of the NCAA championships.


Nate Lee battled the No. 1 seed at 174 pounds Keith Gavin of Pittsburgh for a spot in the championship bracket semifinals but in the end fell 7-4. Lee was the only unseeded wrestler to make the quarterfinals at his weight. He will match up with No. 6 seed Alton Lucas of Hofstra in the fourth session.  


Tyler Sherfey lost in the quarterfinals of the 157 pound weight class to the No. 3 seed from Penn State Dan Vallimont 7-5. Sherfey the No. 11 seed will move to the wrestleback where he will face Matt Moley of Bloomsburg College. Sherfey faced Moley at the Southern Scuffle Dec. 30, 2007, and defeated him 5-3.


Cory Fish earned a victory in the wrestleback of the 133-pound weight class a he defeated Terreyl Williams of Appalachian State 5-3. Fish will face No. 11 seed Joe Baker of Navy in session four. If Fish defeats Baker he will have to face the winner of Reece Humphrey (Ohio State) and Mike Grey (Cornell) also during the fourth session.


Adam Hall collected two victories over higher seeded opponents in the wrestleback of the 149 pound weight class. Hall dropped the No. 12 seed Morgan Atkinson of Cal State Fullerton with an 11-3 major decision and then knocked off No. 10 seed Scott Ervin of Appalachian State 2-1. Hall will face No. 3 seed J.P. O’Conner of Harvard in session four.


Kirk Smith shutout both his opponents during session three of the NCAA championships, to earn two victories and advance in the wrestleback at 184-pounds. Smith defeated Austin Troutman of Appalachian State 6-0 then knocked off the No. 5 seeded Joshua Weitzel of Oklahoma 3-0 to advance to session four where Smith will face the No. 8 seed from Minnesota, Roger Kish


Matt Casperson collected a 2-1 victory over George Mason’s Cayle Byers in the 194-pound wrestleback. Casperson and Byers went to overtime where Casperson captured the escape point for the victory. Casperson then lost to Daren Burns of UNC Greensboro 11-7 to end his run at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.


Levi Jones was defeated by Patrick McLemore of Northern Illinois ending his tournament.


Session four of the NCAA Wrestling Championships will begin Friday, Mar. 21, at 6:00 p.m.
