The NCAA Championships - The Boise State University wrestling team will send nine wrestlers to the NCAA Wrestling Championships Mar. 20-22, in St. Louis.
The three-day tournament will feature 10 weight classes containing 32 wrestlers per weight. Session one and two of the tournament will be held Thursday, Mar. 20. Session one will begin at 11:00 a.m., and session two at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Mar. 21, will feature session three beginning at 10:00 a.m., and session four starting at 6:00 p.m. The fifth session will take place Saturday, Mar. 22, at 2:00 p.m., and will be followed by the championship matches starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Broncos All nine Boise State wrestlers earned automatic bids to the national championships after placing in the top three at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
Cory Fish captured the Pac-10 championship at 133 pounds as he defeated Oregon’s Ryan Dunn 3-1 in the final match. With the victory Fish improved his season record to 23-8 including a 9-1 record in conference. Fish will face the No. 12 seeded Andrae Hernandez (20-11) of Indiana in the round of 32.
Nate Lee posted a perfect 11-0 record in Pac-10 competition as he captured the individual title at the 174-pound class. Lee has posted victories in 13 of his last 14 matches. He is third place on the Boise State squad in winning percentage (.809) and tied for third in dual match wins with 10. In the first round, Lee (16-4) is matched up against the No. 8 seed from Minnesota, Gabriel Dretsch (28-10).
Freshman Kirk Smith received the highest seed of any Bronco at the Pac-10 Championships as he received the No. 10 seed in the 184 pound weight class. He captured second place at the Pac-10 Championships. Smith boasts a 24-3 record which included a 15 match winning streak. Smith also leads the Broncos in winning percentage (.889) and is second in dual match team points with 41. Smith will face Jacob Devlin (20-18) of Air Force in the first session.
Tyler Sherfey was the second Boise State wrestler to earn a seed. He finished second at the Pac-10 Championships and was awarded the No. 11 seed at the 157 pound weight class. Sherfey will face Christopher Stout (20-12) from American in his first match. Sherfey leads the Broncos in wins (29) and technical falls (5).
Nick Smith (17-9) will face No. 10 seed Zach Sheaffer (29-7) of Pittsburgh to open the tournament. Smith finished third at the Pac-10 Championships as he won two matches in the wrestleback. Smith defeated Sheaffer 3-1 at the Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 1.
Freshman Kurt Swartz captured second place at the Pac-10 Championships. He posted a 27-7 record during his first season as a member of the Broncos and is fourth on the team in winning percentage (.794). Swartz will face Chad Porter (25-17) in the first round of the tournament.
Adam Hall will face the No. 2 seed Dustin Schlatter (17-3) of Minnesota in the opening round of the NCAA Championships. Hall posted a 3-0 record at the Pac-10 Championships en route to a second place finish (Hall forfeited the finals match). The freshman has posted a 22-5 record in his first season as a member of the Broncos including five pinfalls.
Levi Jones captured third place at the Pac-10 Championships. This was Jones’ only conference competition after sitting out because of an injury. On the season, Jones posted a 9-7 record with five victory coming via pinfall. Jones will match up against Germane Lindsey (19-14) of Ohio in the first round.
Matt Casperson finished third at the Pac-10 Championships after earning two victories in the wrestleback. Casperson has not been defeated in his last 14 matches and has won 13 of his last 14. He will face Oklahoma’s Joel Flaggert (22-5) in session one.
