Broncos' Ben Cherrington to Compete in National Championship Final at 157 Saturday (March 18).
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma - Boise State senior Ben Cherrington will compete in the NCAA National Championship match at 157 pounds Saturday (March 18). Cherrington, who has secured All-American status by finishing in the top-eight, will compete against Brian Stith of Arizona State in the championship match. To qualify to the national championship match, Cherrington defeated Iowa's Joe Johnston in the semi-final by a score of 8-5 early Friday evening (March 17). The Cherrington vs. Stith match will be a rematch of the 2006 PAC-10 Championship. Cherrington, in the PAC-10 Championship, defeat Stith by pin. Cherrington is now 19-0 this season. The Championship Finals of the 2006 NCAA National Wrestling Championship will be broadcast live on ESPN beginning at 5:30 p.m. Mountain.

Stith qualified to the championship match with an 8-3 win over Derek Zinck of Lehigh.

Boise State had three other wrestlers still wrestling in the consolation bracket Friday but all three lost in the fifth round of consolation - at 133 pounds, Scott Jorgensen lost to Mack Reite of Minnesota (5-0); Tyler Sherfey lost to Mark DiSilva of Central Michigan (3-2) at 149 pounds; and Casey Phelps lost a 3-2 contest to B.J. Padden of Nebraska at 197.

A victory over Stith Saturday would make Cherrington Boise State's second individual NCAA Champion in the sport of wrestling. Kirk White was the Broncos' first, winning the 1999 NCAA Championship at 165 pounds.
