SHERFEY AND LEE DEFEATED IN SECOND ROUND AT NCAA NATIONAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Boise State University wrestlers Tyler Sherfey and Nate Lee were both were defeated on Thursday (March 15) afternoon in their first matches of the 2007 NCAA National Wrestling Championships.

Competing in the second round after receiving first round byes, Sherfey lost to James Strouse of Hofstra, 6-2 in the 157-pound weight class, while Lee was handed a 5-3 defeat by Gabe Dretsch of Minnesota at 174 pounds. Both will next wrestling later tonight in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Strouse scored the first points of his match against Sherfey with a takedown at the 1:40 mark of the match. Strouse was able to ride Sherfey the rest of the first period to gain over two minutes of advantage time. Strouse control the match the final two periods with both of Sherfey’s points coming on escapes.

Lee also fell behind his match as Dretsch gained an early takedown. But Lee escaped toward the end of the first period, and then escaped again to start the second period to tie the match at two points each. Dretsch picked down to start the third period, and took Lee down again for a 5-2 lead. Lee scored the final point of the match with an escape.

Sherfey will next face Luke Salazar of Northern Colorado in Thursday night’s wrestlebacks. Lee will wrestle John Heleniak of Millersville in his wrestleback match.
