Five Wrestlers Advance to Semifinals

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. The Boise State University wrestling team advanced five wrestlers to the semifinals of the Pacific-10 tournament at Bakersfield, Calif., with four of the victories coming via pin.


Cam Jones, 149 lbs., upset the No. 5 seed in the bracket, Eric Maldonado of Cal Poly by fall at the 4:37 minute mark. Jones will now face the No. 1 seed, Morgan Atkinson of California State University, Fullerton for a place in the NCAA National Tournament.


At 157 lbs., Tyler Sherfey had to win twice to qualify for the semifinals. First he defeated Portland State’s Steven Dailey by fall at 2:27, and then he beat Jon Clark of UC Davis by decision, 5-0.


No. 5 seed, Johnny Nunez upset CSU Fullerton’s No. 4 seed Bryan Tice by pin to advance to the semifinals. Nunez will square off against the bracket’s No. 1 seed, Dustin Noack of UC Davis for a chance to wrestle in the finals.


Nate Lee advanced after winning by decision over Cal Poly’s Nick Hernandez 11-5. He is set to face the 174 lbs., No. 2 seed, Jeremy Larson in the evening session.


Heavyweight Andy Patrick moved to the semifinals after pinning Portland State’s Zack Smith.


The Pac-10 Championships will continue at 6:00 p.m., Saturday with the semifinals and the consolation matches.
