Broncos To Compete in Pac-10 Championships

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. The Boise State University wrestling team begins the Pacific-10 Championships at the Icardo Center at Bakersfield, Calif., Saturday. The two-day tournament will run Feb. 24-25, and will feature two sessions each day culminating in the championship matches Sunday at 6:00 p.m.


The Broncos received their seeds today and are preparing to face their first opponents at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.


At 125 lbs., Cory Fish will square off against either Jaime Hernandez of California State University, Fullerton or Tanner Gardner of Stanford. Gardner is the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the nation at 125 lbs. And the No. 1 seed in the Pac-10 tournament.


Levi Jones will represent Boise State at the 133 lbs. class. He is set to face Stanford’s Cameron Teitelman in the only pigtail match of the weight division. Jones enters the match with a 14-13 record on the season including 5-7 in dual matches.


Freshman Jeff Newby will match-up against Matt Schumm of California State University, Bakersfield in the pigtail match at the 141 lbs. division. Newby faced Schumm in the Boise State and CSU Bakersfield dual meet on Dec. 14, 2006.


Newcomer Cam Jones is ranked No. 5 in the Pac-10 and is set to face Cal Poly’s Eric Maldonado (No. 4 in Pac-10) in the quarterfinals of the 149 lbs. weight-class. Jones has posted a 3-3 record since joining Boise State in January.


Tyler Sherfey, represents the Broncos at the 157 lbs. class. He is currently ranked No. 16 in the country and third in the Pac-10. Sherfey is set to face Steven Dailey of Portland State in the pigtail match.


Johnny Nunez will face the winner of Portland State’s Dale Seley and CSU Fullerton’s Bryan Tice in the quarterfinals. Nunez has defeated Seley via pin-fall and lost to Tice.


No. 3 in the Pac-10, Nate Lee, 174 lbs., will square off against Nick Hernandez of Cal Poly in the first round. Lee defeated Hernandez in the dual meet against Cal Poly.


Luke Smith will match-up against the No. 3 seed of Oregon State Kyle Bressler. Smith is 22-14 on the season with one of the defeats coming at the hands of Bressler.


At 197 lbs., Matt Casperson is set to face the winner of the match between Chris Robertson of Oregon and Matt Monteiro of Cal Poly in the quarterfinals.


At the heavyweight position, Andy Patrick, No. 3 in the Pac-10 and sixth in the nation will face Thor Moen of Arizona State. Patrick has recorded a 30-6 record on the season.
