BOISE, Idaho Boise State University picked up two Pac-10 Conference wrestling victories Friday (Feb. 9) night at Taco Bell Arena.  The Broncos first defeated UC Davis, 20-15 before posting a 22-15 win over Stanford University.  The two victories improved Boise State’s overall season record to 10-3, and its league mark to 6-2.

Bronco heavyweight Andy Patrick had both of the clinching victories for Boise State.  In the first match against UC Davis and Boise State holding on to a one point lead, 16-15, Patrick recorded a 14-5 major decision over Broc Maffia to make the final margin of victory for the Broncos five points.  Against Stanford, Boise State was again holding on to a slim lead, 19-15 heading into the final match of the evening.  Patrick once again came through for Boise State as the sophomore from Boise posted a 2-1 decision over Phillip Doerner for a seven point Bronco win over the Cardinal.

Ranked No. 7 in the country by USA Today/Intermat, Patrick improved his season record to 31-7.

Boise State looked to have the UC Davis match well in hand winning four of the first five individual matches for a 16-3 lead.  But the visiting Aggies rolled off four straight wins before Patrick clinched the team win for the Broncos.

In the Stanford match, Boise State once again built up a solid lead at 12-3 before the Cardinal posted two individual wins to tie the score at 12-12 with four matches remaining.  The two teams traded wins at 174 and 184 pounds to keep the score tied at 15, before Matt Casperson gave Boise State its final lead at 19-15 with a 10-1 major decision over Jared Boyer.

Joining Patrick as double winners for Boise State were Jeff Newby and Cam Jones.  Wrestling at 141 pounds, Newby won both of his matches by decisions with a 3-1 win over UC Davis’ Shawn Brendle, and a 6-1 win over Matt Kim of Stanford.

Jones posted the only pin of the night for the Broncos when he stopped Shawn Hartani of UC Davis at the 3:57 mark of the match.  His second win was a 12-10 decision over Tyler Parker of Stanford.

The Broncos will now take the next two weeks off before traveling to Bakersfield, Calif., for the Pac-10 Conference Championships, Feb. 24 and 25 (Saturday and Sunday).
