No. 9 Broncos Beat Utah Valley, 32-6, to Send Seniors Out With Win
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 9 ranked Boise State wrestling team gave its 2010-11 senior class a near perfect send off, Friday (Feb. 4) night, as the Broncos won eight of 10 matches against Utah Valley University en route to a 32-6 win in front of 3,396 fans at Taco Bell Arena.
The Broncos, who improve to 10-2-1 (5-0-1 Pac-10 Conference) on the season, were hosting UVU as part of the Beauty and the Beast competition held simultaneously with Boise State gymnastics. The Bronco gymnasts also scored a victory Friday night as the women beat Cal State Fullerton, 196.175 to 189.175.
For the Boise State wrestlers Friday marked more than just their home finale however, as it also signaled the end of an era for a dynamic group of eight seniors. The 2010-11 Boise State wrestling senior class is made up of: Alan Bartelli, Matt Casperson, Adam Hall, Andrew Hochstrasser, Eli Hutchison, Levi Jones, Kirk Smith and Kurt Swartz.
Following Friday night's win the Bronco senior class has wrestled in 805 total matches for Boise State. Incredibly, the group has tallied a 586-219 career record to date for a winning percentage of .728. The seniors added to their all-time win percentage on Friday night by winning four of their six matches against the Wolverines, including two hard fought losses ending in one point decisions.
With the dual starting at 141 pounds, No. 15 ranked Jones took the mat first for Boise State to face off against Justin Morrill. After wrestling to a 2-2 deadlock after two periods, Morrill scored a two point take down early in the third for a 4-2 advantage. Jones managed an escape, and after earning a point for riding time advantage Jones forced the match into extra periods. Jones pushed the match into a second 00:30 period of OT, but Morrill scored an escape that Jones was unable to answer, falling by 4-3 decision to give UVU an early 3-0 lead in the dual.
Jason Chamberlain managed to even the score for Boise State next at 149 pounds to erase the Broncos last deficit of the night. No. 2 Chamberlain scored an 8-3 decision over Josh Wilson to tie the dual score at 3-3.
Boise State extended its lead to 9-3 as UVU was forced to forfeit at 157 pounds, giving Hall an anticlimactic ending to his career at home. Hall will finish his career with a perfect 10-0 record at home, despite not wrestling on senior night.
Kurt Swartz kept things rolling for the Broncos next at 165 pounds as he scored a win by 5-2 decision over Jeb Clark to give Boise State a 12-3 lead over UVU.
No. 14 ranked Jake Swartz followed his older brother's lead with a 6-4 decision over Brad Darrington in one of the most exciting finishes of the night. Jake opened the 174-pound match strong and pushed the score to a 2-2 tie heading into the third period. A two point take down by Darrington with just a minute left in regulation put Swartz trailing 4-3 with just seconds remaining however. He managed to tie the score once again at 4-4 with an escape with 00:44 left and as regulation expired he shot and scored a take down with just 00:03 on the clock, gaining the final 6-4 advantage in the match.
No. 1 Smith rode Boise State's momentum into the 184-pound match where he would wrestle to a 22-8 major decision victory over Casen Eldredge to give Boise State a 19-3 lead in the dual.
No. 20 Casperson gave the Broncos their sixth win of the night next at 197 pounds as he used a three point second period to hold off Trevor Rupp for a 3-2 decision.
A forfeit by UVU at heavyweight extended the Boise State lead to 28-3 with just two matches remaining.
No. 14 Bartelli provided the next exciting match of the night for the Broncos as he wrestled No. 13 Ben Kjar down to the wire at 125 pounds. After building a 1-0 lead after two periods, Bartelli fell behind 3-1 as Kjar scored an escape and take down early in the third. Bartelli managed to escape with 1:10 remaining in the third but was unable to score a takedown as time expired to fall, 3-2.
No. 2 Hochstrasser would make sure senior night ended in top form though, as he scored the second major decision victory of the night for Boise State against No. 13 Flint Ray at 133 pounds. Hochstrasser used an 8-2 first period to blow the match open early and never looked back, wrestling to a 19-5 major decision win. The win pushed the team score to 32-6 to improve the Broncos' home record to 4-0-1 on the season.
Following the conclusion of the dual Boise State fans were able to send off the final Bronco senior, Eli Hutchison, as Hutchison wrestled Avery Garner in a 149-pound exhibition match. Hutchison wrestled hard but fell just short of scoring a senior night victory, falling to Garner by 5-4 decision.
Boise State will now turn its attention to the it's highly anticipated regular season finale at No. 5 Oklahoma State next Friday (Feb. 11). The Broncos travel to Stillwater, Okla. to meet the Cowboys at 7 p.m.
