BOISE, Idaho - The No. 8 (NWCA/USA Today) Boise State wrestling team is preparing for its' final conference road trip of the season, this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 29-30), as the Broncos head to California to face Stanford and UC Davis in a pair of duals.
Boise State will be in Palo Alto, Calif. on Friday to face the Stanford Cardinal at 7:30 p.m. (PST). On Saturday the Broncos will travel to Davis, Calif. to take on the UC Davis Aggies at 7 p.m. (PST).
Last time out...
Boise State is coming off a big three dual road trip against Pac-10 Conference opponents in which the Broncos wrestled to a 3-0 record. The wins improve their overall record to 11-2 on the season, including 4-0 against Pac-10 opponents.
Last Friday (Jan. 22) Boise State took down Cal State Fullerton in a 28-15 final. The Broncos then traveled to Cal State Bakersfield where they earned a 21-17 win over the Road Runners. Boise State earned its' biggest win of the weekend on Sunday, though, taking care of No. 16 Cal Poly, 23-13.
Boise State in the rankings...
Boise State enters this weekend ranked back in the top-10 in all three major wrestling polls. The Broncos are No. 10 in the intermatwrestle.com poll, tied with Oklahoma for No. 8 in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll and No. 6 by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine.
The Broncos also have six wrestlers ranked by InterMat in the individual top-20 for their respective weight class, which includes five wrestlers being ranked in the top-10. Kirk Smith (17-0 overall, 12-0 dual) continues to hold the No. 1 spot at 184 pounds, which marks the third consecutive week InterMat voted him the top 184 pound wrestler in the country.
Smith is followed by Adam Hall (20-2, 12-0), who is currently ranked No. 2 at 157 pounds. Joining Hall in the top 10 is Andrew Hochstrasser (133 pounds), Levi Jones (141) and Jason Chamberlain (149). Hochstrasser (8-0, 8-0) is currently No. 3, while Jones (14-3, 10-1) and Chamberlain (16-7, 8-4) are both No. 6.
Senior Nate Lee (11-3, 10-2) rounds out the group of Broncos ranked in the top-20, as he was voted No. 11 at 174 pounds.
Looking at the Cardinal...
Stanford (8-6 overall, 0-2 Pac-10) enters this weekend in search of its first conference dual win of the season. The Cardinal dropped both of their Pac-10 duals to date, with a 28-11 loss to Cal Poly and a 31-7 loss to Oregon State.
The Cardinal have two wrestlers currently ranked by InterMat in the top-20. Junior Lucas Espericueta was voted the No. 20 wrestler at 157 pounds this week, while junior Zack Giesen was voted No. 12 at 184.
Looking at the Aggies...
UC Davis has also experienced its' share of struggles so far this season as the Aggies enter this weekend just 1-8 in duals (0-3 Pac-10). Their three conference losses came against Cal State Bakersfield (30-12), Oregon State (33-9) and Arizona State (38-6).
The Aggies currently have three wrestlers ranked in the InterMat top-20, all of which were voted No. 15 for their respective weight class this week. Brandon Low was voted in at 133 pounds, while Barrett Abel made it at 149 pounds and Ricky Alcala was voted in at heavyweight.
Before meeting the Broncos, UC Davis will face Cal State Fullerton on Friday (Jan. 29) at 6 p.m.
