BOISE, Idaho After spending most of the 2007-08 season competing on the road, the Boise State University wrestling team starts a string of six straight home matches this Friday (Jan. 25).
The home stands begins with the University of Oregon on Friday and Oregon State University on Sunday (Jan. 27), ending on Feb. 10 (Sunday) against No. 1 ranked University of Iowa. Both matches this weekend will be held in Bronco Gym with the Oregon dual beginning at 7:00 p.m. and the Oregon State match at 1:00 p.m.
Boise State brings a four match winning streak into Friday’s match. The Broncos are 5-1 in overall duals this year, and 4-1 against Pac-10 Conference opponents. Their only loss was at Cal State Fullerton, 19-13.
Oregon has a 9-7 dual record and is 0-4 in league matches, while Oregon State is 6-5 and 3-2 against Pac-10 opponents.
Four nationally ranked Broncos lead this year’s team. True freshman Kirk Smith (Boise) has the highest ranking in this week’s InterMat/NWCA/NWMA poll at No. 9 in the 184-pound weight class. Smith is 17-1 this season with his only loss eighth ranked Phil Keddy of Iowa at the Kaufman / Brand Open back in November.
Tyler Sherfey and Adam Hall are both ranked 12th in the 157 and 149-pound weight classes, respectively. Sherfey is 19-6 this season, while Hall is 18-5. Hall is expected to miss this week’s matches due to an injury.
Kurt Swartz is the fourth nationally ranked wrestler with a No. 17 ranking at 165 pounds. Swartz has the most wins on this year’s team with a 20-6 record.
Boise State will face its third straight opponent from the state of Oregon in its next home match on Feb. 1 (Friday) when the Broncos host Portland State at 5:00 p.m. in Bronco Gym.
