BOISE, Idaho - The Boise state wrestling team (3-7, 1-4 Pac-12) won eight of 10 matches on its way to defeating the Northern Colorado Bears, 30-6 at Taco Bell Arena, Sunday. The win completed a weekend sweep for the Broncos who took down North Dakota State, Friday.
The Broncos jumped out to an early lead to start the match, something the team has struggled with throughout the season. Steven Hernandez earned a decision in his 149-pound bout to open the match, getting a reversal off a Northern Colorado takedown in the third period to take a 4-3 lead. The redshirt freshman finished a 5-3 victor.
No. 16 George Ivanov extended the Boise State lead to 9-0 with a first-period pin of Boise native Charlie McMartin. The win was the 18th of the season for Ivanov which leads the team.
After Michael Cuthbertson fell to No. 13 Gabe Burak at 165 pounds, freshman Scott Bacon rebounded with a 19-4 tech fall of Josh Van Tine. Bacon stayed aggressive throughout the match, a strategy that paid off when he secured a 3-point near fall as time expired.
Jake Swartz (184), Brent Chriswell (197) and J.T. Felix (285) provided strength at the bottom of the lineup with three-consecutive decisions to expand the Bronco lead to 23-3 with only three bouts left.
Landon Hartley and Shawn Jones contributed the final points to the Boise State total. Hartley notched a decision over Sam Meis (7-2) in his first match as member of the Bronco lineup. Jones picked up six points in the final period to tally an 11-3 major decision over Sam Bauer.
Boise State will look to avenge a 32-10 loss to Oregon State earlier this season when it hosts the Beavers, Friday Jan. 27 for senior night.
