Heavyweights Lead Bronco Charge to 21-16 Win
BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State wrestling (2-7, 1-4 Pac-12) took care of the Beast portion of the 10th-Annual Beauty and the Beast, Friday. The Broncos put together 18-consecutive points on its way to a 21-16 victory over North Dakota State to earn their second win of the year and the 100th win under head coach Greg Randall.
Boise State was down 16-3 after the first five matches, getting its only points from 141-pound Josh Strait's 3-2 decision.
The Bronco heavyweights took control at that point as Michael Cuthbertson (165) started the rally with his 4-1 decision over NDSU's Tyler Johnson. The win gave Cuthbertson his sixth dual victory of the season which is tied with George Ivanov for the most of any Bronco.
Freshman Scott Bacon followed with a win over Joe Garner to bring the Bison lead down to single digits (16-9). Jake Swartz, who entered the match ranked ninth in the country at 184 pounds, kept the momentum going with a 4-0 win of his own to make the score 16-12. The match was Swartz' first since Dec.3, when he was sidelined by injury.
Brent Criswell gave Boise State its first lead of the match and brought the crowd to its feet when he pinned John Gusewelle in the first round, making the score 18-16. Chriswell is now 4-1 this season and has two pins.
Over the Broncos' last road trip, heavyweight J.T. Felix found himself in pressure situations, trying to win matches for Boise State in the last bout. Against NDSU, Felix still felt the pressure, but from the opposite direction, trying to hold on to the lead. He did so with an 8-5 win to close out the match.
The Bronco gymnastics team completed the sweep with a 196.175-191.875 win over Sacramento State. Friday marked the seventh sweep by both Boise State teams in the 10 years the event has been held.
The Broncos will be back in action, Sunday, Jan. 22 when they face Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.
