BOISE, Idaho Boise State University’s Kirk Smith, Tyler Sherfey, Adam Hall and Kurt Swartz are listed among the top 20 wrestlers in their respective weight class this week in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA rankings.
After wrestling unattached in several early season tournaments, Smith decided to not red-shirt this season and made his first official collegiate appearance last week on Boise State’s road trip through California. The true freshman from Boise, Idaho won all three of his matches and improved overall record to 15-1 to rank ninth in the 184-pound weight division. Smith’s only loss this season is to Phil Keddy from the University of Iowa in the finals of the Kaufman/Brand Open back in mid-November, 5-2
Keddy, who is ranked eighth, and Smith are expected to match up again next month when Boise State hosts the No. 1 ranked Hawkeyes on Feb. 10 (Sunday) in Taco Bell Arena. The match is scheduled to start at Noon.
Sherfey also cracked the top 10 for the first time this season coming in 10th in the 157-pound weight class. Sherfey moved up the ranks when he handed then ninth ranked Chase Pami of Cal Poly a 5-2 defeat last Sunday (Jan. 13). Sherfey is 18-5 this season.
Hall is 12th at 149-pounds. He lost to ninth ranked Morgan Atkinson of Cal State Fullerton last week (Jan. 11), 7-4, before coming back with two wins at Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Poly to improve to 18-5 on the season.
Swartz, who had been ranked earlier in the season at 165 pounds, moved back into the rankings this week at No. 18. Swartz is 18-6 this season.
The Broncos, who fell from their No. 25 ranking this week after losing at Cal State Fullerton, 19-13, travels to Davis, Calif., this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 18 and 19) for two Pac-10 Conference matches. Boise State will wrestle Stanford University on Friday and UC Davis on Saturday.
