Broncos' Rally Comes Up Short Against Utah Valley
OREM, Utah - The Boise State wrestling team (1-7, 1-4 Pac-12) battled back from an early 16-point disadvantage but could not pull off the comeback win against Utah Valley, Thursday, falling 19-18.
The Broncos stumbled into a 16-0 deficit at the outset of the match which began at 125 pounds. Boise State forfeited the 125-pound bout before losing three-consecutive bouts at 133, 141 and 149 pounds. Freshman Preston Hu made his duel-match debut at 133 pounds, falling 3-2 to Derek Malan.
George Ivanov was the first member of the Boise State squad to earn a win, marking four in a row for the junior. Ivanov was down 1-2 entering the final period but roared back to score eight points in the final two minutes to win 9-3.
Michael Cuthbertson followed with another Boise State win, but by a much smaller margin. The redshirt junior defeated the Wolverines' Ethan Smith at 165 pounds in double overtime by a score of 2-1. Smith and Cuthbertson each earned one-point escapes in the second and third periods, respectively and after a scoreless first overtime, the Scottsboro, Ala., native tallied an escape in the second overtime to end the match.
After a loss at 174 pounds, the Broncos trailed 19-6 and needed a win to keep their hopes alive. Cody Dixon did just that with a close 3-2 win over David Prieto at 184 pounds to narrow the margin to 10 points.
Brent Chriswell kept the added to the momentum with a quick pin at 197 pounds, pinning Bryan Chamberlain in the first period, only 1:18 into the match.
Boise State was down 19-15 heading into the final match of the night, with J.T. Felix left to compete. The sophomore defeated his opponent with a 9-5 decision but it was not enough to put the Broncos in front, as the final score read 19-18.
The Broncos will return to Boise for their next match against North Dakota State, Friday Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. The match will be part of the Beauty and the Beast Event, where the Bronco wrestling team will participate in conjunction with the gymnastics team, which faces Sacramento State.
