WRESTLING TEAM PICKS UP SECOND STRAIGHT WIN WITH 26-5 VICTORY OVER CAL POLY

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. The Boise State University wrestling team put in its second dominating performance in two days handing Cal Poly a 26-5 defeat in Pac-10 Conference action Sunday (Jan. 13).

 

After winning nine of 10 individual matches in its 35-6 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday (Jan. 12), this time the Broncos won eight matches to improve its overall record to 3-1 and 2-1 in Pac-10 duals. Cal Poly falls to 4-4 and 3-2 in the Pac-10.

 

Boise State, ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA poll, won all of its matches by decision, with the exception of Kirk Smith and Matt Casperson at the 184 and 197 pound weight classes, respectively.

 

Smith improved his season record to 15-1 with a 12-2 victory over Ernie Varela, while Casperson is now 11-6 on the season following his 11-3 win over Arturo Basulto.

 

Boise State also picked up key wins from its two nationally ranked wrestlers. Adam Hall, No. 12 at 149 pounds, posted an 8-1 decision over Eric Maldanado, with No. 11 Tyler Sherfey handing No. 9 ranked Chase Pami a 5-2 defeat.

 

The Broncos return home for a week of practice before heading back to California for a match against Stanford University on Friday (Jan. 18) and UC Davis on Saturday (Jan. 19). Both matches will be held on the UC Davis campus.
