BOISE STATE WRESTLES PAST PENN STATE, 22-15, PLACES SEVENTH AT NATIONAL DUALS

            CEDAR FALLS, Iowa  No. 16 Boise State (USA Today/InterMat/NWCA) wrestled its way to a seventh-place finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Sunday, with a win against No. 14 Penn State, 22-15. A win over the Nittany Lions (7-6, 0-0 Big Ten Conference) earned the Broncos (10-2, 1-0 Pac-10 Conference) a 3-2 record on the weekend.

            After fighting to a 2-2 record on Saturday, the Broncos won six matches against Penn State, including one win by forfeit at 157-pounds. After falling behind with a loss in the 125-pound match, Andrew Hochstrasser earned a 5-1 decision against Jake Strayer to give Boise State its first points of the dual.

            Senior Cory Fish would give the Broncos their second win of the day at 141-pounds by defeating Frank Molinaro, 9-2. At 149-pounds, Boise State freshman Jason Chamberlain fell just short of pulling off an upset against Penn State’s Bubba Jenkins. Chamberlain, who entered the weekend ranked No. 18 (USA Today/InterMat/NWCA) lost to Jenkins (ranked No. 2 nationally), 4-3.

            In the 165-pound match Bronco senior Tyler Sherfey earned his second major decision of the tournament, defeating Mark Friend, 10-0. Kirk Smith gave Boise State it’s next win, beating Jake Decker, 6-1. In the Broncos’ final win of the dual, Brent Chriswell recorded a 7-5 decision against Clay Steadman.

            With the win, Boise State improved to 2-2 against top-20 teams at the National Duals. The Broncos went 1-2 against top-10 teams in the tournament. Boise State returns home next to host Cal State-Bakersfield Sunday (Jan. 18) at 2 p.m.
