BOISE, Idaho   The Boise State wrestling team finished Saturday’s action at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa with a 2-2 record and a spot in the seventh-place dual against Penn State University. Boise State (9-2, 1-0 Pac-10 Conference), who entered the tournament ranked No. 16 nationally (USA Today/InterMat/NWCA), faced three top-10 opponents on day-one of the National Duals.

The Broncos started the day off strong with a 24-12 win over No. 9 Wisconsin. The win set Boise State up for a battle with No. 2 Iowa State. The Broncos fought valiantly, winning five of 10 matches against the Cyclones. In the end, however, Boise State would fall short of pulling off the upset, 15-19. The loss bumped the Broncos into the consolation bracket, where they would rebound with a 24-15 win against Wyoming. That win would be Boise State’s last of the day, though, as the Broncos fell in another tough match-up against No. 6 Ohio State, 21-12.

Against Ohio State, the Broncos fell in a hole early and were unable to mount a late rally. The Buckeyes won the 125, 133, 141 and 149-pound matches to start the dual. Boise State earned its first win at 157-pounds with Adam Hall’s 6-2 decision against Sean Nemec. The Broncos would only manage two more wins in the dual, however, with Nate Lee winning the 174-pound match 5-2 against David Rella and Brent Chriswell scoring a win by fall (2:02) against Cody Gardner.

Boise State standouts Andrew Hochstrasser (133-pounds) and Kirk Smith (184) both recorded rare losses against Ohio State, with Hochstrasser losing his first dual match of the season, 6-4, against Reece Humphrey. Hochstrasser entered the weekend ranked No. 2 nationally (USA Today/InterMat/NWCA), while Humphrey was No. 8. Smith entered the weekend ranked No. 4. His 3-2 loss against Ohio State came at the hands of Mike Pucillo, the No. 2 ranked 184-pound wrestler in the country.

Boise State will next face Penn State in the tournament’s seventh-place dual, which is scheduled for Sunday (Jan. 11) at 9 a.m. (CT).

Boise State vs. Wyoming: Consolation Second Round

Boise State rebounded from its disappointing quarterfinals loss with a 24-15 win against the University of Wyoming in the second round of the consolation bracket. The Broncos recorded three major decisions and a win by fall to improve their National Duals record to 2-1.

For the second consecutive dual, Andrew Hochstrasser got the Broncos their first points of the dual in the 133-pound match. After Wyoming’s Mike Martinez beat Brian Owen 5-3 at 125-pounds, Hochstrasser took down Wyoming’s Cory Vombaur in a 9-0 major decision. Hochstrasser’s win was one of six for the Broncos in the dual.

Boise State’s Adam Hall took care of Tyler Davis at 157-pounds with a 13-3 major decision to keep the momentum going. At 165-pounds, Tyler Sherfey collected his first win of the day in dominating fashion, defeating Alex Reider by an 11-1 major decision.

Junior Nate Lee recorded the Broncos fifth win of the dual by defeating Shane Onufer, 11-4. Bronco sophomore Kirk Smith gave Boise State its’ final win of the dual, and its fifth straight match victory, by defeating Dallas Hintz by fall at the 4:23 mark.

Boise State vs. Iowa State: Quarterfinals

Boise State fell just short of taking down No. 2 Iowa State Saturday afternoon, dropping its second round dual of the National Duals, 15-19. The Broncos reached their quarterfinals match-up with the Cyclones after defeating No. 9 Wisconsin, 24-12, in the tournament’s opening round Saturday morning.

The Broncos fought back-and-forth with the Cyclones, with the victory being decided in the final matches of the dual. Iowa State took an early advantage after Tyler Clark defeated Boise State freshman Brian Owen at 125-pounds in an 8-2 decision. It didn’t take long for the Broncos to respond, however, as Boise State sophomore Andrew Hochstrasser earned a 9-6 decision over Nick Fanthorpe in the 133-pound match.

In the final eight matches, both teams would win four times. But while Boise State scored four decisions against the Cyclones, Iowa State recorded one win by fall and another by major decision. In the 165-pound match Boise State’s Tyler Sherfey fell to Jon Reader in an 11-2 major decision. Then, at 197-pounds Brent Chriswell lost to Iowa State’s Jake Varner by fall (2:20).
