Boise State Wrestling 2-1 on First Day of National Duals; Fall Short of Upset against No. 1 Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Boise State wrestling team finished day-one of the 2010 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals hosted by Northern Iowa University in Cedar Falls, Iowa with a 2-1 record, after ending the day with a 31-0 win over Northern Iowa in the consolation bracket. The Broncos only loss of the day came against No. 1 Iowa, 20-12, in the quarterfinals.

Boise State won all 10 matches against Northern Iowa, with just one win coming by major decision. Alan Bartelli opened the dual off with a 3-1 decision over Terrance Young at 125 pounds. He was followed by Andrew Hochstrasser, who defeated Ryan Jauch at 133 pounds with a 9-4 decision.

Levi Jones extended Boise State's lead to 9-0 with a 9-6 decision over Charlie Ettelson at 141 pounds. Next, Jason Chamberlain took care of Jamal Lawrence at 149 pounds in an 11-4 decision. Adam Hall won Boise State's fifth match of the dual at 157 pounds, beating Tyson Reiner, 8-3.

In the 165-pound match, Michael Cuthbertson held on for a narrow 4-2 decision over David Bonin. He was followed by Nate Lee who beat Jarion Beets with a 6-4 decision at 174 pounds. Kirk Smith earned his third win of the day at 184 pounds, beating Joe Johnson with a 6-1 decision.

Matt Casperson earned Boise State's last decision of the dual, beating Dustin Bauman, 6-2, at 197 pounds. Sam Zylstra concluded the shutout with a win at heavyweight, earning Boise State's only major decision of the dual, 8-0, over Christian Brantley.

The National Duals will continue on Sunday, with Boise State facing Wisconsin in the consolation bracket. Should the Broncos win their next dual, they will advance to the fifth-place round Sunday afternoon.

No. 9 Broncos fall short against No. 1 Iowa, 20-12

            The No. 9 Boise State wrestling team put up a strong fight, but fell just short of a monumental upset against No. 1 ranked Iowa, 20-12, in their second dual of the weekend at the National Duals.

             The Broncos managed to win just four matches against the Hawkeyes, all of which came by decision. Iowa, meanwhile, earned wins by major decision at 125 and 149 pounds, putting the dual out of reach.

            Andrew Hochstrasser earned Boise State's first win of the dual at 133 pounds with an 8-6 decision against Nate Moore. Adam Hall recorded the Broncos' second win with an 8-2 decision over Jake Kerr at 157 pounds.

            Kirk Smith kept his overall record perfect on the season (10-0) with a 3-1 decision against Philip Keddy at 184 pounds. Boise State's final win of the dual came in the heavyweight match, where Sam Zylstra earned a 4-3 decision against Blake Rasing.

            The loss is Boise State's first of the season. The Broncos now sit at 5-1 in duals (1-0 Pac-10 Conference). With the loss Boise State moves to the consolation bracket where they will face the winner of Northern Iowa and Bloomsburg at 5 p.m. (CST), Saturday evening.

Broncos top Buffalo to open tournament

            Boise State opened its' weekend at the national duals with a decisive 31-9 win over Buffalo. The Broncos won seven matches in the dual, including three by fall and one by major decision.

            Alan Bartelli earned Boise State's first win of the dual with a 3-1 decision over Dan Bishop at 125 pounds. He was followed by Andrew Hochstrasser, who won the 133-pound match against Kevin Smith, 5-3.

            Levi Jones recorded the first win by fall of the weekend for the Broncos, pinning Lemual Schutt just 1:36 into the match. After dropping a close decision at 149 pounds, the Broncos scored again at 157 pounds as Adam Hall earned a 16-6 major decision over Andrew Stella.

            Nate Lee extended Boise State's lead at 174 pounds with a 10-5 decision over Brian Sheehan. Kirk Smith followed that up with a win by fall (4:35) over Josh Peters in the 184-pound match. Boise State's final points of the dual came in the heavyweight match as Sam Zylstra recorded the Broncos' third win by fall (4:21) with a pin against Jedd Mason.
