Broncos' Late Surge Not Enough to Top No. 23 Stanford
Stanford, Calif. - The Boise State men's wrestling team (0-5, 0-3 Pac-12) fell 20-16 against No. 23 Stanford at Burnham Pavillion, Thursday.
The action started at 165 pounds, where the Broncos got off to a good start with a win from Michael Cuthbertson. The lead was short-lived though, as Boise State freshman Scott Bacon went up against No.1 ranked Nick Amuchastegui at 174 pounds. Amuchastegui handed Bacon a 9-0 loss to put the Cardinal up 4-3.
Sophomore Cody Dixon wrestled his first match at 184 pounds this season, dropping down from 197 to fill the shoes of Jake Swartz. Dixon fell 9-4 to Spence Patrick and the Stanford lead expanded to 7-3 heading into Brent Chriswell's season debut at 197 pounds. Chriswell, a redshirt junior from Port Orchard, Wash., won a 3-2 thriller against Alan Yen to bring the Stanford lead back down to one point.
Boise State would see that lead grow to 14 over the next three matches. Sophomore J.T. Felix lost a 4-2 overtime decision, followed by a Bronco forfeit at 125 pounds and a 16-5 loss by Shawn Jones against No. 9 Ryan Mango at 133 pounds.
Ben DeMeulle (141) and Steven Hernandez (149) rallied with wins for the Broncos, but could only bring the lead to seven, securing a Stanford team victory. Demuelle defeated Donovan Halpin, 7-6, while Hernandez earned a 14-4 major decision against Timmy Boone.
In the final bout of the night, 157-pound George Ivanov entered the match as the 16th-best wrestler in his class according to Intermat's latest poll. Ivanov only improved on that by taking down Garrett Schaner in a 6-1 decision. The Counil Bluffs, Iowa native is the Broncos' wins leader and moves to 14-4 record on the season.
The Broncos will continue their road trip Friday, when they face Cal State Bakersfield. The opening match is slated for an 8 p.m. (MT) start.
