Dewey, Romero Fall Short at Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill. – Austin Dewey and Demetrius Romero fell one win shy of placing at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championship, Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The two entered Friday’s session in the first consolation round of eight, but dropped their opening matches.

Dewey concluded the tournament with a 2-2 record at 174 pounds after losing to Ryan Christensen of Wisconsin in a 6-3 decision. Dewey led 3-2 before Christensen got a takedown and near-fall points in the final minute of the third period.

The redshirt senior is 18-8 on the season.

Romero (165) lost by a pin (1:11) to Kaleb Young, competing unattached for Iowa. Romero finished the prestigious tournament with a 3-2 record to improve to 17-8 on the season.

The Broncos conclude their 2016 portion of the season, and will compete in dual meets only until the Pac-12 Championships, Feb. 26 in Palo Alto, Calif.

Boise State will open 2017 with three duals on the road. The road trip begins Jan. 6 in Brookings, S.D. against South Dakota State, before travelling to Fargo, N.D. for a dual against North Dakota State, Jan. 8. The Broncos will then travel to Greely, Colorado to face Northern Colorado, Jan. 15, before returning home Jan. 21 for a dual against CSU Bakersfield.

The Broncos are 1-1 on the season in duals, with a win over Utah Valley and a loss to Purdue.
