Two Broncos Advance at Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill. – Two Boise State wrestlers are still alive at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships following the first day of action, and will wrestle in Friday’s third session, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (MT).

Demetrius Romero (165) and Austin Dewey (174) are still fighting for a chance at third place at the nationally renowned tournament.

Advancing to the quarterfinals with a decision and a fall, Austin Dewey lost a close, 3-2 decision to Lelund Weatherspoon of Iowa State, the nation’s ninth ranked wrestler at 174 pounds. The loss dropped the redshirt senior to the second consolation round of eight.

Romero opened Thursday with a 4-3 decision over Harvard’s Kyle Bierdumpfel before dropping a 3-2 decision to Brian Hamann of North Carolina State to drop to the consolation. The redshirt freshman bounced back with a pair of decisions over Abner Romero and Dustin Williams to advance to Friday’s action.

Green dropped his opening match in a 7-3 decision to Eleazar Deluca of Rutgers, but bounced back with three straight wins in the consolation. Green notched his seventh fall of the season (6:23) over Brett Bye of South Dakota, and won decisions over Tyler Ponte, Columbia, and BJ Clagon, Rider.

The win over Clagon, the nation’s seventh ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, is Green’s first win over a ranked opponent this season. Green lost in the first consolation round of eight to Hayden Hidlay of North Carolina State.

Losing his opening match in an 8-3 decision to Chris Weiler, Del Toro bounced back with a pair of decisions over Martin Mueller and Flowrestling’s No. 18-ranked  Ian Baker. Del Toro lost a narrow, 3-2 decision to Brady Ayers to end his run at the tournament.

Competing alongside Green at 157 pounds, AJ Fierro lost both of his matches.
