Three Podium Finishers Lead Broncos
Dec. 18, 2016

Reno, Nev. – Three podium finishes – led by Austin Dewey’s second place finish – paved the way for the Boise State wrestling team to finish in seventh place at the Reno Tournament of Champions with 63 points.

Dewey made it to the finals of the annual tournament at 174 pounds, while redshirt freshmen Fred Green and Demetrius Romero made it to the fifth-place match at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively.

Green finished sixth while Romero finished fifth. This was Romero’s third podium finish during his debut season with the Broncos.

Dewey, a redshirt senior, was undefeated through his first four matches, before dropping a close, 6-4 decision to Jordan Rogers of Oklahoma State in the finals. Dewey notched falls over Jacob Dupuis (0:24) and Chaz Polson (6:09) to give him six on the season – his most pins in a single season.

Entering the tournament with an 11-4 record, Romero continued to make a name for himself, winning his first two matches to advance to the semifinals. A loss to Branson Ashworth of Wyoming, and a last second loss to Peter Galli of Stanford dropped Romero to the fifth place match. Facing Hestin Lamons of Oklahoma State, Romero won in a major decision, 12-4.

Green began the tournament with a technical fall over Eastern Oregon’s Terry Mason (17-0), a fall over Paul Fox of Stanford (4:41) and a 7-2 decision over Wyatt Shields to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. Losses to Colton Shorts of Cal Poly and Fox in a rematch placed Green in the fifth place match, which he would lose in a fall.

Green is tied with Dewey with six pins on the season.

Will Bardezbain (125) and Dakota Wall (149) also advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament, but neither would win another match.

Transfer AJ Fierro continues to provide depth for Boise State at 157 pounds, going 4-2 at the tournament before losing to Fox in the consolation semifinals. Fierro finished with two pins to go along with two decisions.

Kadyn Del Toro (184) and Harley DiLulo (197) both went 3-2, while Jacob Otuafi (157), Keavon Buckley (197) and Gabe Gonzalez (285) went 2-2.

Boise State returns to action at the Midlands tournament in Evanston, Ill., Dec. 29-30 to close out 2016, before opening the new year with three duals on the road.

The Broncos return home, Jan. 21 against CSU Bakersfield.
