Dec. 5, 2015

LAS VEGAS – Boise State sophomore Geordan Martinez placed at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational for the second-straight year, finishing seventh at 149 pounds at the Cashman Center, Saturday.

Martinez finished fifth at 141 pounds at last year’s tournament.

This year’s event, the 34th edition of the annual tournament, consisted of 40 schools. Martinez was the only Bronco to place.

After going 2-1 Friday, Martinez began Saturday’s action with an 8-2 decision over Steven Galiardo of Brown. The win advanced him to the first consolation round of four and guaranteed him a spot on the podium. Martinez’s next match was against 15th-ranked Alec Pantaleo of Michigan, and he ultimately fell, 7-4.

With the loss, Martinez dropped to the seventh-place bout, where he notched a 20-8 major decision over North Dakota State’s Clayton Ream.

Martinez went 4-2 at the tournament, including a second-round win over 19th-ranked Alex Griffin of Purdue. His only losses at the event came to the nation’s fifth- and 15th-ranked individuals.

Next up for Boise State is the Reno Tournament of Champions, Dec. 20.
