Dec. 5, 2014

LAS VEGAS - Three members of the Boise State wrestling team advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Friday. Michael Cook, Geordan Martinez and Steven Hernandez are each still alive entering the second day of the tournament.

A pair of freshmen won their opening-round matches, each of which coming via pin. At 141 pounds, Martinez pinned Jamel Hudson, the No. 9 seed from Hofstra, in 5:09. At heavyweight, Gabriel Gonzalez earned a fall in 2:26 over Grand Canyon's Nate Zabbott.

Each lost in the second round, but Martinez was amongst three Broncos still wrestling in the day's second session following a 9-3 win over Ty Buckiso of The Citadel.

Cook (133) dropped his opening-round match, but won back-to-back decisions in the wrestleback, while Hernandez (157) won three-straight in the consolation bracket after dropping his opener.

Each of the three individuals won their evening match to advance to Saturday. Cook defeated Hofstra's Maverick Passaro (8-5), while Martinez picked up bonus points with a technical fall over Iowa State's Dante Rodriguez (5:37) and Hernandez earned a 5-3 decision over Utah Valley's Logan Addis.
